Cleaning expert says most of us are not washing our pillowcases enough

We all know how important it is to keep our homes clean and tidy, and a great place to start is the bedroom, as it's often viewed as a sanctuary and a place of rest. A clean bed is not only vital for a good night's sleep and relaxation but according to one cleaning expert – it is important for your health too.

Pillowcases in particular come into close contact with us on a daily basis and according to TikTok user Chantel Mila, washing and changing our pillowcases more often is the "key to clearer skin and respiratory health". The cleaning guru shared her advice in a viral video, in which she said most of us don't wash our pillowcases as often as we should.

Explaining further, Chantel - who posts under the username @Mama_mila_ - urged her followers to listen to her advice and clean their pillowcases more often and said: "This is your friendly reminder to go and wash your pillowcase. Pillowcases build up sweat and oils which can lead to breakouts and allergies."

Chantel told viewers that washing pillowcases every three to four days was important using a gentle liquid detergent and two to three drops of eucalyptus oil to get rid of any allergens or dust mites. The cleaning expert added: "Never use fabric softener as this can leave a residue that can cause breakouts, opt for white vinegar instead."

Commenters were blown away by the advice, although some were concerned that the vinegar could leave a smell on the pillowcases and other items in your wash. However, Chantel insisted it "deodorises and leaves your clothes smelling amazing."

On the advice, one commenter said: "I use a pillow pet that I’m so emotionally attached to that I can't wash it" and another called the tip "amazing". Some users debated the advice and one user in particular said that washing your pillowcases just once a week should do the trick. In response, however, one TikToker pointed out that this is not the case for those with allergies or skin conditions.

In other videos, Chantel can be seen showing her followers how to fold napkins like a professional, make their bedrooms smell nicer and deep clean their pillows. To deep clean her pillows, Chantel fills a bath with hot water and adds laundry powder and stain remover. She said: "Pillows trap so much sweat, dirt and oils so stripping them once a year helps to clean all that buildup."
