Food-loving Brits have been left horrified by an American restaurant's take on the classic fish and chips. The battered dish continues to be a firm favourite for many takeout goers in the UK thanks to its light and crispy fish, side of mushy peas and chunky chips.

Seemingly the exact opposite of what you'd get if you were to order the dish on the West Coast of the States, as one Brit found out after his friend 'finally' sent him a picture of him trying the food for the first time. The man said he felt 'triggered and upset' after his mate shared a photo of the deep-fried meal.

Sharing his shock in a post on Reddit the man added the snap of the dish saying it just 'wasn't right' as he reached out to fellow Brits in need of 'serious help from fellow countrymen' who were quick to add their thoughts on the fast-food version.

The photo clearly shows four pieces of panko-breaded fish (resembling fish fingers), thinly cut fries, a side of sauce and a large 'soda' with no mushy peas, vinegar or battered sausage in sight. One person shared the man's shock, seemingly outraged at the lack of crispy battered fish. He said: "Breadcrumbs? I am enraged. The chips are too thin as well. No tartar sauce, no mushy peas. Bet you it's got no salt or vinegar on it as well."

A handful of other readers joined in to add their shock to the side of fries instead of the thick, chunky chips the British take of the meal is so famously paired with. As another person said: "Tell your 'friend' that is fish fingers and fries... not CHIPS!"

This was closely followed by waves of readers comparing the dish to Britain's failed takes on American classics, like pre-packed supermarket burgers, frozen pizza and the well-known brand of Mexican-inspired seasonings and taco kits you can often find at UK shops.

As one commenter highlighted: "It's like comparing Dominos to a proper Italian pizza, Taco Bell to proper Mexican food, or a Rustlers burger. All fine in their own way, but just not the same."

However some were quick to defend the meal as although it didn't resemble a classic take on fish and chips it's a completely different style. As one person said: "Is it trying to be British fish and chips? No. It’s American, clearly, but that doesn’t make it terrible by default."

This was followed by people who had also visited the well-known chain in Seattle themselves, which has a reputation for serving 'freshly caught salmon, cod, hallibet, and shellfish, just cooked in a different way.
