Baby names have a tendency to dip in and out of fashion, with many names once considered old-fashioned ten years ago now well-liked choices among parents-to-be. Of course, such names can fall out of favour again once they've been popular for some time, unless you've opted for a very classic choice.

Although many parents love a vintage pick, it takes some time for a name to become cool again. Those currently expecting also shouldn't expect boomer monikers to make a comeback anytime soon - on account of a rather 'morbid' reason. According to one knowledgeable name expert, there's a '100-year rule' when it comes to names, which can often be measured in terms of generations, with names connected to the baby's grandparents' generation considered to be the least likely choices.

Sophie Kihm, name expert at Nameberry, told the Metro: "Names tied to parents' parents' generation (the grandparents of the baby) are usually considered to be among the least fashionable choices one could use for a baby, like Brenda and Gary today. She added: "Sorry to be morbid, but a big influence is that there just aren't that many people with these names around anymore. Names that were common for babies in the 1920s – think Olive, Felix, and Otis – feel youthful once again."

According to Sophie, there are six names in particular that are at risk of dropping off the face of the Earth altogether, and it's unlikely we'll see a resurgence anytime soon.

Girls

Stephanie – The once popular Stephanie is now regarded as a bit of a "mum name", according to experts, meaning it's widely regarded as a somewhat dated choice.

Ellen – Once a favourite among previous generations, Ellen is now viewed as a "grandma name" and it may be some time before it enjoys a revival.

Ashley – Many parents of young children will have this once common unisex name, and so will be after something that feels a little fresher.

Boys

Kieran – A classic Millenial pick that's now starting to sound a bit tired, according to the pros.

Steven – Steven, and the more traditional Stephen, have both fallen out of vogue over the course of the past two generations and are now viewed as "grandpa" names.

Tony – An unfashionable nickname name which again puts people more in mind of grandfathers than newborn babies.
