Tokyo Game Show 2023 – Capcom TGS skips Monster Hunter
One of the major shows of Tokyo Game Show, Capcom's TGS showcase, has just wrapped up, with one expected release being notably absent from the show.
Capcom's TGS showcase delivered everything that it promised, with updates on Dragon's Dogma 2, Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6, Ace Attorney, and Exoprimal. However, one game that was notably absent was a brand-new entry in the Monster Hunter franchise. While nothing had officially been teased about a new Monster Hunter ahead of Capcom's TGS showcase, the mixture of comments made about an unannounced title set to sell millions in a recent earnings report paired with the last entry – Monster Hunter Rise – being announced at Tokyo Game Show, had many (myself included) sure we'd see the debut of Monster Hunter Generation 6.
However, the only glimpse of Monster Hunter was a new announcement for the recently released Monster Hunter Now mobile game, and the debut of the Monster Hunter 20th anniversary logo and artwork, ahead of the anniversary of Monster Hunter's PS2 release in March 2004. While it's not Capcom's fault that players got their expectations up, the Monster Hunter segment definitely made the lack of a new entry worse for players.
Wolves hunt in packs arisen
While the lack of Monster Hunter was disappointing, one thing that didn't disappoint (aside from the lack of a release date) was Dragon's Dogma 2, which continues to be an absolute dream of a game. The fact a sequel to Capcom's 2012 cult classic RPG that got massively overshadowed by Skyrim which launched months earlier (and wasn't nearly as good as Dragon's Dogma, if we're being real) is amazing in the first place, but the fact it looks this good only adds to the excitement.
Series director Hideaki Itsuno – who most recently directed the phenomenal Devil May Cry 5 (he's also known for directing Devil May Cry 3 and 4, as well as Rival Schools) – hosted the segment on Dragon's Dogma, running players through some of the gameplay mechanics in the new release. Most notably, while the Fighter and Mage classes return from Dragon's Dogma, the Strider class has been split into two separate classes – Archer and Rogue.
Capcom announces Street Fighter 6 tournament with record-breaking prize pool
While it'll be impossible to go over every detail here, the part that most impressed me was a segment in which the player and his pawns wailed on the legs of a giant ogre who then fell between a gap and was able to be used as a bridge. While that may sound minor, small details like that are what made games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild so exciting.
Other announcements included Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy being dated for January 25, 2024 (the day before Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are set to launch), as well as some updates on the upcoming DLC for Resident Evil 4 (including Resident Evil 4 VR), Street Fighter 6, and Exoprimal.
