'Pupils and teachers deserve an Education Secretary rooted in the real world'

Crumbly concrete is not the only crisis in schools. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, with her ludicrous claims, is a walking disaster zone.

As buildings go to RAAC and ruin under the Tories, Ms Keegan tried to put a pathetic spin on the situation by saying pupils prefer temporary portacabins to permanent classrooms. What does this Margaret Thatcher disciple, who demanded gratitude for shutting schools, expect next? A big pat on the back?

Pupils, parents and teachers deserve an Education Secretary rooted in the real world not prone to self-aggrandizing flights of fancy. Labour did fix the roof when the sun was shining with impressive school and hospital building programmes. The ceilings now falling in, or in danger of collapse, after the Tories slashed investment, imposed cuts and austerity. If Ms Keegan really thinks people are happier in portacabins, she could have ordered them for her team instead of blowing £32million refurbishing her department’s headquarters.

Rail fail deals

The Tories cannot be on the side of rail passengers after giving the two least reliable train firms lucrative new contracts. Fewer than half of Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry’ trains arrive on time, compared with a 70% national average. Yet they have been rewarded for failure with nine and eight year deals respectively. If Labour wins power it must scrap franchises and rebuild a publicly owned railway, or use break clauses after three years for Avanti and four for CrossCountry. Disastrous privatisation only benefits the system’s fat controllers, not train travellers.

‘Victim’ Brand

Organisations that dealt with Russell Brand may convince the public they have changed – if they publish honest reviews. He, however, plays the victim and makes money out of sexual allegations. A crazed conspiracy theorist who is not funny any more.
