A Norwegian pensioner has been remanded into custody by a judge investigating him over the fatal stabbing of his British partner at their Costa Blanca home.

The 82-year-old was pictured for the first time yesterday morning as he was hauled to court in handcuffs by police following his detention 24 hours earlier. Following the private hearing, officials confirmed that a duty judge had remanded him in custody.

A spokesman for the magistrate said: "Orihuela Court of Instruction Number Two, acting as a duty court, has decided the man arrested on Friday on suspicion of killing his partner should be provisionally imprisoned. The case has been categorised as a homicide.

"The judge has also decided to pass the ongoing investigation over to the specialist Court of Violence against Women in Orihuela. There were no previous reports of any official complaints to the authorities made by either of the pair."

Overnight, neighbours spoke of their shock as it emerged the deceased British pensioner, who police say was 76, was a widow who had been living with the unnamed Norwegian man for just over two years. They said the woman, called Susan, was from Clackton-on-Sea in Essex and had lost her husband who was also from the UK about seven years ago.

Expat Ray Howard, who lives two doors away from their two-bed bungalow south of Alicante, said: "They kept themselves to themselves. They always said ‘hello’ but that was pretty much it. He phoned a friend of hers and asked her to come round and she was the one who called the police.

"I came back from a quick trip out in the morning to find police outside the house. They asked me if I had seen anything but there was nothing I could really tell them. Susan must have been living in the house for around 15 years and although the police are saying she’s 76 I think she was older than that because I remember her having a 70th birthday party when she moved in."

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "She drove a blue Volvo estate which is still on the drive. There’d never been any problems between the couple as far as I know. We used to see them holding hands in the street.

"He’d come and go but he’d always say ‘hello’ when I saw him. It’s very quiet around here and we never get any trouble so this has shocked us." Following the arrest, a spokesman for the Civil Guard said: "We can confirm that today at 7.40am we were alerted to a possible domestic violence incident at a property in Orihuela Costa which resulted in the death of the victim.

"The wounds she had could correspond to an attack with a bladed weapon. The victim is a British woman aged 76 and the suspected killer, who is under arrest, is a Norwegian man aged 82."
