One baby has died and three others have been hospitalised after going into cardiac arrest.

The New York City police responded to a call at Divino Niño Daycare in the Bronx after horrified staff made an urgent call to 911.

Four children had collapsed, including a one-year-old boy, a 7-month-old girl, and two 2-year-old boys. The one-year-old boy died, and the other three were taken to the hospital.

They appear to be in stable condition, according to the New York Police Department. Officials from the New York City Fire Department told The Mirror US that the call came in at 2:42pm on Friday, September 15.

Sources told the Mirror that this does not appear to be a case of carbon monoxide poisoning, with a witness at the scene telling us that officers can be seen testing the air - but so far readings are negative.

The New York Post reported that there was an investigation ongoing into the possible presence of fentanyl, though that has not been officially confirmed.

A police source told the publication that the children had eaten something, and then gone to sleep for a nap at around 1 pm. They didn't wake up at 2:30 pm, so Narcan was administered.

Investigators are now trying to determine what happened.

A spokesman said they were called after reports that a child had suffered a cardiac arrest at the location at 2707 Morris Ave.

They told The Mirror US: "Two pediatric patients [were sent] to Montefiore hospital in critical condition. Two additional patients [were] taken by other means to area hospitals. [There's] no information on them. Police and fire units on the scene [are] further investigating."

It was later confirmed that the girl and one of the boys were taken to Montefiore, while the other boy was taken to a BronxCare Health System location. The cause of the incidents is yet unknown - officials are at the scene, and caution tape is cordoning off the entrance to the centre.

CBS says the state inspected a daycare in that building last week - which passed, and the Office of Children and Family Services found no violations there.

Those inspections include several safety checks. For example, the state noted there were no poisonous or toxic items accessible to children, and a caregiver certified in CPR and first aid was present at all times with the children.

It's classified by the state as a "group family day care," meaning it's a daycare that is operated out of a home. The day centre has total capacity eight children, aged 7 weeks to 12 years old.
