Household energy bills rising from Easter – whether or not regulator Ofgem reduces the price cap – will turn up the heat on already struggling families.

The typical £500 increase from April as the Conservative Government axes rebates is another hammer blow and, as the Daily Mirror shows today, totally avoidable.

Suppliers and producers enjoying soaring war profits as a result of Vladimir Putin’s ­invasion of Ukraine is a sickening sight.

With families and businesses having trouble paying higher prices, the Tories are failing to represent the interests of the British people.

Were suppliers making extra money from investment and innovation, they would have a case.

But when it’s from a war, a responsible Government would be doing everything in its power to keep prices down and use a windfall tax to subsidise homes and businesses.

We need a Government on our side. Alas, we are lumbered with the Tories instead.

Meeting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for face-to-face talks is no guarantee that Rishi Sunak will resolve the complex challenges around the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Lifting checks on goods entering from Great Britain would not be the end of the issue.

ERG Tory MPs and the Democratic Unionist Party are hostile because they know that accepting a solution and returning to power-sharing would mean a Sinn Fein First Minister.

Doing a deal isn’t just about Northern Ireland’s prosperity and peace. It is also key to unlocking Britain’s membership of the vital Horizon Europe scientific research project.

Sunak must face down the rebels. We will discover shortly whether he can.
