Radio DJ Greg James missed his usual slot on Radio 1 breakfast show today as his wife Bella Mackie was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

On Friday morning, Greg, 37, took to Instagram to explain his absence from the show as he detailed the situation with his followers. Greg said that he needed to miss the show to be by Bella's side for her emergency appendicitis operation. Greg re-shared a post from his beloved wife Bella, 40, where she told fans: "In the morning I have to have surgery for appendicitis and I am terrified. If you've had this op and want to reassure me, that would be nice (only reassurance nothing else)."

Sharing pictures and videos from the hospital, Greg told his followers that he was trying his best to keep his wife's spirits up ahead of her surgery. "Tbh I think Bella might chuck me out before the nurses do. Ps. I know it's always mentioned but f***ing hell we're lucky that so many brilliant people work for the NHS. I'm never not amazed by them. They've all been so kind to a very anxious person today," he gushed about the doctors and nurses looking after his wife.

In another image shared to his Instagram stories, Greg posted a picture of himself and Bella awaiting her surgery as Bella lay on a hospital bed. He captioned the post: "Luckily for her she married an annoyingly upbeat man to keep her company (before I got chucked out). Back on the radio on Monday so I can be on call in the morning." Luckily for Greg, his pal Jordan North is covering for him today as he takes over the Radio 1 reigns and airwaves.

Greg and Bella have been living happily with one another ever since Bella popped the question back in February of 2018. The couple tied the knot in September of that year and have been enjoying married life ever since. Bella is a journalist and author from London who has worked for the likes of VICE and The Guardian. She adopted the name Mackie to distinguish herself from her father, journalist Alan Rusbridger who was the editor-in-chief of The Guardian from 1995-2015.

It is unclear when the couple first started dating, however in March 2017 Bella wrote a Vogue article about embracing singledom. She revealed she was married before Greg to a man she met when she was 28 - but divorced within two years and breaking tradition, Bella asked Greg to marry her.

The loved-up couple kept their engagement under wraps until June 2018, when Greg announced the happy news. Taking to Instagram he wrote: "Oh while we’re doing announcements, here’s something else...I’m having the time of my life and enjoying my work more than ever.

"I feel really content and it’s nice to have my sh** together before I undertake a huge new work challenge. One of the main reasons for this happiness is because I met this person. This is Bella and in February she asked me to marry her.

"I said yes immediately because she is the smartest, funniest and most beautiful person I’ve ever met. The only problem is she loves staying up into the early hours drinking as much as I do and this is not conducive with 5am alarms. That said, it’s been quite a year."
