Matt Hancock is seen reduced to tears as he's interrogated before being forced to wrestle with celebrities in the new trailer of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

The former health secretary is one of 16 famous faces to join the gruelling Channel 4 reality series, in which participants are put through quasi-military training in the remote jungle of Thung Ui, North Vietnam. The stint comes nearly a year after Mr Hancock's controversial appearance on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here 2022, on which he finished in third place behind runner-up Owen Warner and winner Jill Scott. He was nominated for six consecutive Bushtucker trials during his time on the ITV show, after viewers rallied to make him suffer following his highly-criticised performance as Health Secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the brutal challenges and gruelling conditions of the Australian camp, the 44-year-old hasn't been deterred from survival-style reality TV.

In the official trailer for Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, it looks like the disgraced MP is about to be put through his paces all over again. In the opening scene of the 40 second teaser, Mr Hancock has a black bag ripped off his head as he stands in the pouring rain and looks stoically ahead. In another scene, a teary-eyed Matt is instructed to 'relax' by two interrogators, who tell him he looks like "he's about to be executed." He's also seen crawling through muddy waters and struggling to keep his balance on the ropes, whilst being screamed at by the merciless drill sergeants. Another clip from the trailer sees Mr Hancock being tackled to the floor in a muddy puddle in what looks like a very violent game of rugby.

"Being on SAS was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced," Matt said. "It’s one of the toughest physical and mental things I’ve ever done. It really opens your eyes and makes you look into yourself."

The Conservative MP also said that he "wanted to push" his "limits" after emerging from the "most challenging period as health secretary during the pandemic."

Matt, who was health secretary for 18 months before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, faced widespread criticism for the UK government's response to the crisis. In June 2023, he apologised during a public inquiry after admitting his cabinet had made a "huge error" in assuming the virus could not be prevented from spreading. He resigned from the position in June 2021 over breaking social distancing guidelines, after CCTV images him kissing adviser Gina Coladangelo, with whom he was having an extramartial affair, were leaked.

Matt's participation in SAS: Who Dares Wins has been met by strong backlash from the public, with many taking to Twitter to express their outrage.

"Disgracefully, Matt Hancock will now appear on Channel 4 'Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins'. There should be laws against corrupt failed ministers profiting from their notoriety in this way," one dismayed person wrote.

"He’s not a celebrity, he’s an abject failure of a corrupt MP," another unimpressed individual said. And a third added: "Why did Matt Hancock go on I'm a celeb and SAS who dares wins? ATTENTION & MONEY! his career is over".
