Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has reacted after superstar Lionel Messi lavished praise on one of his players while on international duty.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's close bond with his Argentina teammates is obvious, especially following their exploits at the World Cup in Qatar. His appraisal of Spurs defender Christian Romero's talents showed his loyalty to his compatriots as he waxed lyrical about his performances.

The 25-year-old colossus helped to keep a clean sheet for his nation during their 1-0 win over Ecuador during the international break. After his captain Messi won the game for the world champions with a sumptuous free-kick, he was quick to thank the center-back for his defensive efforts.

Speaking to reporters following the World Cup qualification victory, La Albiceleste's goalscorer said: "For me, he is the best defender in the world right now." He added: "Amazing performance tonight, man of the match."

Of course, for a man who has played with the likes of Carles Puyol and Sergio Ramos during his storied career, the veteran forward is well-versed in what it takes to be a top defender. Now, it seems as though Romero also has impressed his new manager at club level.

When asked about Messi's comments on the centre-half, Spurs boss Postecoglou was quick to join in with the plaudits. Speaking to talkSPORT, the Australian head coach said: "I wouldn’t argue with Messi. I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t like to play against him [Romero]."

Going further, the former Celtic boss also offered some valuable insight into what kind of player the Argentine defender is on the training ground. Despite Postecoglou having only joined the North London club in the summer, it is obvious that Romero has made an strong impression on his manager.

He added: "Most of the boys don’t like to train against him, he’s a real competitor and I love that about him. Whether it’s training or a game, what you see is what you get with Romero."

The ex-Atalanta star has had a swashbuckling start to the new Premier League season, playing a central role as Spurs made an unbeaten start to the campaign. Contributing to three wins and a single draw so far this term, the defensive ace has also provided two goals.

Speaking previously to the Evening Standard, Romero praised the atmosphere in the camp at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium currently. Praising his new boss' approach since moving to the club, he said: "He's a coach that works perfectly for Tottenham, he's brought a lot of new hope.

"It might take a while, but I think what he's doing is fantastic. He's putting together a great group and creating a really good atmosphere."
