Which? has revealed the UK's best peanut butter - and you might be surprised to see where popular brand Sun-Pat fared in the list.

Slathered on top of a slice of toast, dunked with an apple, or eaten straight off the spoon —peanut butter is an easy go-to snack many enjoy. Brits weren't always keen on the spread- but over the last decade, it has become a staple for many.

In 2020, it overtook jam as the nation's favourite spread with almost £100million being spent on the product in the 12 months until April. This is compared to the £96million that was spent on jam, according to Information Research Incorporated.

Which? is renowned for its taste tests, and this time it has looked into peanut butter. Researchers at the consumer group conducted a blind taste test with a panel of 72 people who regularly buy and eat peanut butter. This group tested supermarket's own-brand peanut butter as well as some of the bigger brands, and the panellists rated the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each product.

The most expensive peanut butter brand in the taste test was Sun-Pat which will - on average - set you back around £3.80 for a jar. However, Which? found this was not the most popular. According to the panellists, their favourite was M&S Crunchy Peanut Butter which had a score of 72%.

This product was the priciest of the supermarket's own-label peanut butter costing £1.65 for a 340g jar - or 49p per 100g. However, the M&S own-brand crunchy peanut butter impressed taste testers the most with the majority saying the product achieved that "crucial salty-sweet balance".

Tying in second place, was Asda's Just Essentials Crunchy Peanut Butter and Lidl's Mister Choc Crunchy Peanut Butter both scoring 69%. Both products cost £1.25 for 340g - or 37p per 100g - and they are the second cheapest peanut butter in the taste test.

Asda's peanut butter had a "good, appetising colour", and the crunchy texture was a hit with more than two-thirds of tasters. Most also liked its flavour and salt levels. Lidl’s peanut butter also went down well with the Which? panel. Again, most found the colour appetising and the crunchy texture impressed two-thirds of tasters.

Third place was taken by Skippy Crunchy Peanut Butter with again a score of 69%. Although tasters weren’t wowed by its looks, most said it had the perfect level of crunch and overall was a "good allrounder". It was also the only one on the test with no palm oil. This option was slightly pricier with a 454g jar costing £3 - or 66p per 100g.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: “Peanut butter is a staple for many households and our results show you can enjoy a great tasting peanut butter with a satisfying crunch on a budget.

“M&S was our tasters' top choice, with most finding it had the perfect salty-sweet balance, while cheaper options from Asda and Lidl weren't far behind. Sun-Pat is more than double the price of the cheapest jar and got the lowest overall score.”
