A pedestrian died when a police car hit him in Warwickshire yesterday.

The man in his 60s suffered a serious head injury in the crash, which happened on Coventry Road, Nuneaton around 8.45pm.

Neither of the officers, who were travelling to the scene of an emergency, were injured in the collision.

The pedestrian died at the scene along the B4113, between Gipsy Lane junction and the Griff roundabout, near the location of another fatal police car collision in 2019.

His next of kin has been informed. Police said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the man’s family and friends at this time.’

Warwickshire Police is appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage of the collision, to come forward.

It has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has started an investigation.

A spokesperson for the police watchdog said: ‘After we were notified by the force, we sent our investigators to the scene and to the police post-incident procedure to begin gathering information and initial accounts from the officers involved.’

This referral is standard protocol in the event of a death involving police activity.

It is the second time the force has had to make such a referral following a fatal collision involving a police car on this stretch of road in recent years.

Jessie Whitehead, 74, was hit and killed by a police vehicle responding to an emergency call while she crossed the road in her mobility scooter.

An IOPC investigation found the police car was travelling at an appropriate speed for the brake response, and the officer ‘could not have avoided’ the crash.

They had been driving at 65mph along the 50mph-limit carriageway before braking.
