My Mum, Your Dad star Roger confessed he wasn’t ready to date when he first joined Davina McCall's ITV dating show.

The 58-year-old postman from Derbyshire was signed up to the show by his daughter Jess, and during the first episode of the show, which aired on Monday, Roger was filmed having his first date in 40 years with fellow contestant Caroline. Viewers were left heartbroken as he sadly shared the heartbreaking news his wife Joanne had died 18 months ago at the age of 52, after battling cancer. The couple, who shared three children, had been married for more than 30 years, and Caroline was sobbing when Roger spoke about his wife’s tragic death.

Some viewers took to social media to share their concerns over the dad-of-three’s confession, with many suggesting it was too soon for the silver-haired postman to be looking for love. However, in an interview with Lorraine on Tuesday, Roger admitted he was apprehensive over appearing on the dating show, and didn’t feel ready to find love following his wife’s death.

“I knew I wasn't. I loved it and think I get slightly better as it goes on. It was difficult but it wasn't something I couldn't pass up,” he explained, and went on to add that his late wife wanted him to have a second chance at love. “She was perfect. to send a message and she's still controlling me... it didn't surprise me hearing what she said.”

Roger, who was joined by his daughter Jess on Lorraine, said he was “nervous” on his date with Caroline, but felt lucky to have been picked by her as she was incredibly supportive. “I think I was very lucky it was Caroline, she nursed me through it as I was very nervous,” he shared. Meanwhile, Jess explained why she signed her dad up for My Mum, Your Dad, and sadly revealed she and her siblings felt he was “losing himself” after the death of their mum.

“He needed it. We were sort of losing him a bit, he was losing himself, so we were losing the dad we knew. He shrunk back into himself, we said to him we're ok if you're ok (with doing the show). we thought if this is something you're interested in, go for it,” she added. But Jess, who has been secretly watching her dad from the confines of a bunker on the lavish country estate, alongside the other contestants’ children, was initially terrified at the thought of her controlling her dad’s love life.

“It was really scary, I didn't know they were going to film me actually controlling the relationship,” Jess shared, as she confessed she was a “control freak”. But after working through some nerves and confidence issues with her dad, she was happy for him to give the show a chance. “It wasn't about forcing him to date but just being around other single people. There's nothing wrong with being single, just hearing about other experiences, we thought they could help. everyone's been vetted so it was a safe space,” she said.

My Mum, Your Dad, continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV
