Lady Gaga made headlines around the world when she stepped onto the red carpet at the VMAs back in 2010 dressed from head to toe in meat.

The chart-topping star had already become a global sensation at the time thanks to her creative public persona and catchy music but she took her notoriety to a new level with the beefy gown. With this year's ceremony taking place on Tuesday, September 12 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey those looking back at past VMA red carpet's will inevitably have Gaga on their mind.

But just how much do we know about the meat dress and where it came from and even ended up? Here we take a look at some of the most interesting facts about the frock.

The man behind the creation was Franc Fernandez, who had not only previously worked with the Scissor Sisters and Beyoncé but had also already styled Lady Gaga in her Bad Romance music video. Franc crafted the entire outfit using Argentinian beef, including her bag and her beret.

The nature of the material meant they couldn't give the dress a trial run so Gaga literally put it on her body for the first time during the ceremony and then stepped out into the limelight. Franc told HuffPost after the VMAs: “We didn’t get a chance to have a fitting. The only time she had it on was for the VMAs. Only when I saw it in the monitor did I know it would be big.”

While it may have seemed like one big publicity stunt, the meaning behind wearing the dress was actually more political as Gaga wanted to protest the US military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy on sexuality, which was why she had gay veterans by her side when she hit the red carpet. She later told Ellen DeGeneres: “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights... pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”

While you may imagine a dress made of meat wouldn't smell too appealing, Franc admitted to MTV that “Gaga said it smelled good. It had a sweet smell.” He then described his unique way of keeping it fresh as he transported it adding: “I had a little cooler that I carried it in. Its own little coffin. While it was being made it was refrigerated, [worked on] and then refrigerated [again]. It took a span of two days on and off. Maybe three with sourcing and getting materials and everything.”

As shocking as it was, the dress wasn't even Gaga's first time dressing herself in meat. ust days before wearing the meat dress Gaga revealed her Japanese Vogue cover shoot where she was dressed in a bikini made of raw beef.

Since it's headline-making debut, the garment has stood the test of time and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame one year after Lady Gaga's VMAs appearance as part of the exhibit Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power. They paid a taxidermist $6000 to preserve the dress, which required painting to keep it looking 'fresh.'
