Your Mum, My Dad fans voiced their concern for widower Roger as he shared a heartbreaking bombshell with his gobsmacked date.

The first episode of the two-week dating series, hosted by Davina McCall, follows contestants Roger, Monique, Clayton, Caroline, Elliott, Sharon, Natalie and Paul try to find love after they were nominated for the show by their grown-up kids. Viewers heaped praise on the show, which was hailed as a breath of fresh air, but some were left worried over one contestant as he made a devastating confession during his first date.

The women had to pick who they wanted to go on a date with, and Caroline, impressed with their initial spark, picked postman Roger, 58. However, their romantic chat took an unexpected turn when he revealed his wife of 30 years, Joanne, had died 18 months ago. Caroline was left in floods of tears as Roger bravely shared his agonising loss, as he discussed his late wife’s battle with cancer. Joanne, 52, was diagnosed with a melanoma four years after successfully beating breast cancer, and died last year, leaving him and their three kids, including daughter Jess – who nominated her dad for the show – broken-hearted.

In the heart-wrenching moment during Monday night’s show, Roger told Caroline he had spotted the melanoma during a holiday in Italy, and after being diagnosed with cancer for a second time, it had spread to her brain. Talking about her death, a visibly emotional Roger explained his wife had gone to sleep on the sofa and didn’t wake up, leaving viewers in bits. But some were uncomfortable with him appearing on the show so soon after the tragic death of his wife. “Lovely as #MyMumYourDad is - and while there is no timeline on grief, Roger is simply not ready for this. It makes for uncomfortable viewing. This should have been picked up at Psych Assessment stage…,” one concerned viewer tweeted.

Another added: “Bro you can’t go from a 40 year relationship, mrs passing a year ago and jumping back into the deep end of dating. Plus it’s on tv… I don’t wanna be that person. But only a year is a bit quick ain’t it lol #MyMumYourDad.” While another suggested it was obvious Roger was missing his wife too much to be looking for love again. “It’s quite clear that Roger is just wishing it was his wife sat on that couch with him & that the whole thing was a terrible idea,” they wrote.

“I think roger is finding this all too soon bless him. Also his daughter as well. It’s gona be hard seeing him with someone else. It’s only been a year. I think they both need more time,” one viewer commented. While another agreed: “This show really IS far too early for him. This is not the time - he needs to talk it all out and good friends and family to carry him for awhile longer. Perhaps he will a meet a friend that stays a caring friend after the cameras have gone away.”

Before making his debut on the show, Roger revealed he had faced some criticism from family members who didn’t support his decision, but he wanted to find some self-confidence after the death of his wife. “Following my wife passing 18 months ago, I didn’t really want to meet anyone. You don’t expect it to be you and you don’t expect it to be your wife. But I’m going on the show to get some confidence. I must have subconsciously wanted to meet someone by saying yes to the show,” he shared.
