A hugely popular beach has left sun seekers underwhelmed thanks to its hidden murky side.

A group of disgruntled tourists left Swanpool Beach in Falmouth, Cornwall less than impressed. Typically the coastal spot receives rave reviews for its clear blue waters and long stretch of sand. There's plenty of room for children to run around and build sandcastles, while the Beach Café is open all year round and is famous for its unusual ice cream flavours.

As exciting as all of this may be, it has proved not enough for some beachgoers, Cornwall Live reported. Several particularly unhappy tourists have complained that Swanpool Beach is "disgusting" and "spoiled by debris". One even went so far as to say that the amount of seaweed is not “human friendly”. Karen M blasted the seaside spot on Tripadvisor, claiming it has a “disgusting stench and (is) full of flies”.

She added that "no one I know who has young children would think of going to Swanpool to start them swimming due to the sludge in the water before you get to clearer areas", saying it was "such a shame" and that it used to be one of her favourite beaches.

Another visitor echoed her feelings, adding: “The view from the beach is stunning and the depth of the sea is perfect for children and adults alike. The sea bed is level and safe for children to practise swimming in. Beware though it really isn’t very pleasant to sit on as the seaweed and litter is a real problem. Creating sandcastles with children unearthed lots of litter, food debris and items left by others.

“Sadly the copious amount of seaweed and litter attracts hordes of flies, wasps and other insects. Litter bins were overflowing which only increased this problem. Really wanted to like this place but doubt we’d return, especially with young children.”

Others were less concerned about the presence of some seaweed and the occasional bug however, instead choosing to focus on the positive aspects of the beach experience. One happy customer wrote: “Beautiful beach which feels a bit quieter in the busy months. Dog free in summer which is pleasant. Parking is free over winter when dogs are allowed which is convenient.”

Another added: “Well I got rain, sun, drizzle and muggy heat on my coastal walk so decided to have a quick swim to relax... just what I needed. Clear seas and relatively clear of seaweed today love this pebble and sand beach.”

Swanpool is not the only beach to have come under fire from disgruntled visitors. Sun worshippers recently said they could not leave a British beach fast enough after discovering "disturbing" items by the water.

Visitors who went to Margate Main Sands on England’s southeast coast in July said they discovered "streaked toilet paper" floating in the sea. Another tourist, who went to the beach in August, said it was the "worst day trip ever".

They wrote on Tripadvisor: "Took grandchildren to Margate by train. First thing you notice on emerging from the train station is the smell of sewage everywhere. The beach was full of rubbish, broken glass and large flies. Sea was full of seaweed and more rubbish. The only place to shelter from the rain was taken up by homeless and their bedding. Will not be going again."

Similar levels of frustration were aired by disgruntled visitors to Scarborough, who came away branding the North Yorkshire resort town “no go” destination for tourists after they visited the beaches. The couple, visiting from Glasgow, Scotland, said they were disgusted by what they found in Scarborough and urged tourists to “keep on driving”.

They said: "The Main Street was a chav paradise, loudmouths, slot machines and a general air of grubbiness. Went for a coastal walk the next day and yes it was just as bad, bus back to North Bay. It’s no great surprise places like Scarborough struggle, the place needs a good clean up and that includes a lot of the clientele."

The couple, posting under the username annemarieb181 on TripAdvisor, had visited Scarborough for three nights earlier this year. Their remarks echo several other negative reviews of the seaside town.
