Sky Sports News was suddenly forced off air for 25 minutes on Sunday morning following a fire scare at their London studio.

Fans were perplexed when at around 7:25am they left with a placeholder screen without explanation, as the hosts were nowhere to be seen. Social media was awash with confusion before normal service resumed at 7:50am and co-presenter Gail Davis confirmed no one had been hurt.

She and Chris Latchem had been forced to leave their desk at short notice before it was explained that a 'fire scare' was the reason behind the unexpected break. Instead of covering sport's biggest headlines on a busy weekend of action, the usual Sky Sports News updates were replaced with a plain screen, and fans were left dumbfounded.

"What is wrong with Sky Sports News?" one puzzled viewer asked on social media. Another questioned: "Anyone know what’s happened to Sky Sports News? Went to an ad break about 10 minutes ago and it hasn't come back…"

The show was being broadcast from Sky's headquarters in Isleworth, a campus which consists of three television studios. Fans expected presenters Davis and Latchem to be giving them the latest reaction to Saturday's major sporting events, such as England's 27-10 victory over Argentina in their opening match of the Rugby World Cup.

Inspired by George Ford, who scored a hat-trick of drop goals, Steve Borthwick's men got off to the perfect start in Marseille. Also in action were England's footballers, who drew 1-1 with Ukraine to see their 100 per cent record in qualifying for Euro 2024 come to an end.

Arsenal star Oleksandr Zinchenko had given the home side the lead, with the match forced to be played in the Polish city of Wroclaw instead of war-torn Ukraine. Kyle Walker soon responded, though, scoring his first England goal on his 77th cap to ensure that Gareth Southgate's side at least earned a point.

Meanwhile, there was a huge surprise in the UFC, as Sean Strickland pulled off a shock to beat Israel Adesanya. The American fighter was then crowned the new UFC middleweight champion.

On Sunday, cricket returns to the fore as England play another ODI against New Zealand in preparation for next month's World Cup in India. Jos Buttler and co lost the first clash by eight wickets and are hoping to improve when they play at the Ageas Bowl from 11am.

The Republic of Ireland also feature as part of Sunday's action in Euro 2024 qualifying, hosting the Netherlands in a must-win fixture for their hopes of reaching next summer's tournament in Germany. Stephen Kenny's side currently sit fourth in their group with only three points picked up from their first four games.
