A video of Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic being beaten up by two men has been widely shared on social media.

In the 16-second clip, Tomic, the world number 292, is seen lying on the floor holding his arms up to try and shield himself from the blows raining down on him. One of his attackers aims a kick at his head before hitting him with his shoe.

Tomic appears terrified as one of the men continually shouts at him to “get up ya dog”. Australian media has reported that the attack happened outside a tattoo parlour in Surfers Paradise, a city on Queensland’s Gold Coast. It is not known when the footage was taken. Mirror Sport has contacted Tomic’s representatives to request comment.

Queensland Police are aware of the footage, but are understood not to be investigating as no complaint has been made by Tomic. The 30-year-old played on the Challenger Tour in Turkey on Thursday, losing in three sets to Nick Hardt in the round of 16 in Istanbul.

At the height of his career Tomic reached No17 in the ATP world rankings, with his best performance at a Grand Slam coming when he reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2011. He dropped down the rankings to No825 last year and missed out on a wildcard for the Australian Open in January.

“Our team that looks at the decision has a team of people that looks at the decision of wildcards,” the Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said. “[They look at] the player coming in, the strength of their play, what events they’ve been playing, how much they’ve been playing, are they the younger part of our future generation. There’s many factors that go into it.”

Tomic is a well-known figure in Australia and appeared on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2018, only to leave after just three days.

“I don’t need this now. I’ve never felt this bad in my life,” he said to the camera before leaving. “This is the jungle. It’s so different. Not what I expected. I need some peace. This is going to knock me around for a week, two weeks. I’m just not coping. It’s too risky. I don’t know if I can do it. I’d like to speak to someone.”
