Novak Djokovic is looking to win his 24th grand slam title at this year’s US Open, but it was a different story in the 2022 edition of the competition.

Djokovic did not take part in the tournament due to not being vaccinated against Covid-19. As a result, like eight months earlier at the Australian Open, the 23-time grand slam champion did not feature at Flushing Meadows.

Prior to the 2022 Grand Slam, Djokovic also withdrew from the Canadian Open for the same reasons, despite initially entering the tournament. This led to the Twitter account for Racquet Magazine making a comment about Djokovic on the social media platform.

The first tweet on August 5 last year read: “Dunno why this guy keeps entering tournaments hoping they’ll change their rules for him.”

In response, Djokovic’s wife, Jelena, posted a reply expressing her disbelief over the tweet from the magazine’s account. Jelena wrote: “Is this a real, international tennis magazine?! @atptour. Wow.” She then added four shocked face emojis.

Racquet Magazine then responded by expressing their desire to see Djokovic participate in the 2022 US Open. However, the account stood by their initial comments about the vaccine requirements from the tournament.

“Hi Jelena,” the tweet read. “We’d love to see your husband play in New York, along with the rest of the tennis world. Hopefully he’ll decide he can follow the rules.”

Jelena responded again by questioning the original tweet from the tennis magazine. She said: “Based on tennis rules and ranking - Novak’s entry in the tournament was automatic. So, what was the logic behind your tweet?”

Racquet Magazine then gave two lengthy responses to Jelena’s tweet explaining their reasoning for their initial criticism of Djokovic.

The first tweet read: “As of right now, he’s also automatically entered into Cincy (Cincinnati) and the USO (US Open) - is he gonna withdraw from them now knowing he doesn’t want to follow rules or wait until the last minute like he’s just done for Montreal? Or maybe after the draw is made like he did in Indian Wells?”

The second tweet read: “Not trying to disrupt your Friday night, but since you came our way, it’d be great to get him to take his stand by withdrawing from those events now so the whole tennis world isn’t talking about him not getting a shot for weeks to come. A stand is only a stand if one takes it.”

Jelena concluded the conversation on Twitter by standing up for her husband amid the criticism. "His most important stand is to be a tennis champion. And he took it,” Jelena wrote. “I mean, a stand is a stand. Given that you are a tennis magazine- maybe focus on that in the weeks to come? Take a stand. Be what you are meant to be. A tennis magazine that writes about tennis.”
