Ince breaks ranks with Klopp as Liverpool finally find Wijnaldum replacement

Liverpool enter the international break in high spirits, going unbeaten in their first four games to sit third in the Premier League.

The Reds' summer signings have proved to be shrewd buys, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister both impressing boss Jurgen Klopp. But former Liverpool skipper Paul Ince has not been quite as convinced by Szoboszlai's start as the Reds manager.

Ince's contradiction of Klopp's verdict on the midfielder comes as the Liverpool boss was nominated for the Premier League's manager of the month award and club chiefs finally selected the replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Liverpool news.

Ince breaks ranks with Klopp

Paul Ince has claims anyone who compares Liverpool's new signing Dominik Szoboszlai to Steven Gerrard needs to "stop drinking". Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has been impressed with the Hungarian, though Ince urged supporters to calm down over his start to life at Anfield.

"If anyone compares Liverpool midfielders to Steven Gerrard, those people need to stay away from the bars and stop drinking! You don't get players like Steven anymore," Ince told LuckyBlock.com.

"In my day, you had to play well for decades before being 'world-class', nowadays a player has three or four good games and people claim they're world-class. It doesn't work like that. Especially not in my eyes."

Liverpool chiefs have singled out Ryan Gravenberch as the long-awaited replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman left Anfield in 2021 having been a mainstay of the Reds' midfield during their glory years.

Klopp has struggled to replace the Netherlands international, but bosses at the Reds believe that Gravenberch can be the man to finally take Wijnaldum's place. Gravenberch joined Liverpool on deadline day for a fee in the region of £34m.

And Liverpool bosses are said to see 'similarities' in the style of play between their new star and Wijnaldum. The Reds have long eyed a move for Gravenberch, though he opted to join Bayern Munich last summer.

Klopp up for award

Jurgen Klopp has been nominated for the Premier League manager of the month award for August. The Reds boss is up against Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, David Moyes and Ange Postecoglou, having hailed his side following their win over Aston Villa.

"It was a top game, the best for a while, a long time. I don’t know the last time we were that convincing, and we had a few good games obviously now – especially the end of last season and these kinds of things. That was really good," he said.

"We could use the formation today properly, everybody wanted the ball or protected or showed or offered. So, it was a top game, cannot say differently. I don’t know when I can say that the next time, but for today it was as good as could be."
