Tom Cruise may be a legendary actor but he has admitted he pays to watch the opening weekend of his own movies like everyone else.

The Top Gun star, 60, shared the revelation on Jimmy Kimmel Live as he discussed Top Gun: Maverick and his 'pretty emotional' on-screen reunion with former co-star Val Kilmer.

The actor joked about making movie fans wait 34 years for the sequel, but admitted the release was actually delayed due to cinema closures amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the sequel's release he explained: "The film is made for the screen... we made it for theatrical, me, my friends, the whole crew."

But it was his omission that he is part of a 'paying audience' that struck a chord with host Jimmy.

“I love that,” he gushed as he further heard how the actor 'disguises' himself in a baseball cap but sometimes fans seek him out for autographs, which of course he obliges.

The Mission Impossible actor admitted his goal as an actor is to 'entertain' and his mother, Mary Lee Pfeiffer, who died in 2017, encouraged him to do his own stunts — something he clearly takes pride in as a 'performer'.

Cruise continued: “Look, I grew up I always wanted to travel the world so when I started making movies, I was able to go watch movies in other countries so I always go watch films with other audiences and watch their movies with them.

"So, I do. When I make a film I wanna go see it with an audience.” He added: "I just try to do everything I can, use every tool that I have, to entertain the audience.

And if the box office ratings are anything to go by, he's certainly done that!

In a tweet at the time he penned: "To all the films in release, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors: congratulations. To the audience: thank you for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you. See you at the movies."

The star's latest movie, Top Gun: Maverick, broke records after becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year, earning $1.4 billion, to date, in worldwide box-office sales.

But he was also rewarded handsomely for his revisiting his on screen alter-ego Pete Mitchell.

Reports suggest he was paid a whopping $100 million salary for Top Gun: Maverick making him Hollywood's highest paid actor according to Variety.
