Police are trying track down a group of Chester FC supporters after they chanted about Lucy Letby during their game against Hereford on Tuesday night.

Letby, 33, is the most prolific child serial killer in post-war British history. The nurse was given a whole-life sentence last month after being found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six other infants while working as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester hospital in 2015 and 2016.

Letby was born in Hereford and a group of Chester fans used that information to create a sickening chant during the National League North fixture at the Deva Stadium on Tuesday night. The home supporters chanted: "Lucy Letby, she's one of your own."

Chester have condemned the disgraceful chant, with vice-chair Jim Green insisting it "demonstrated a deeply concerning lack of compassion, understanding and decency". The non-league side are now analysing the footage to try to identify the shamed fans.

Several fans inside the Deva Stadium heard the chant and have complained on social media.

"Chester FC condemns the appalling chant heard during our match with Hereford," Green told the Daily Mail when probed about the chanting. "We are ashamed to be associated with anyone responsible for the chant and will be reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and take the appropriate action. It is reprehensible behaviour and demonstrates a deeply concerning lack of compassion, understanding and decency.

"The impact of Lucy Letby's horrifying crimes continues to be felt throughout our community and the collective thoughts of the football club, our staff and supporters remain with the families and loved ones of the babies."

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have recently promised to crack down on so-called 'tragedy chanting'.

"The CPS has updated its prosecution guidance on football related offences which reconfirms that tragedy-related abuse can be prosecuted as a public order offence," a spokesperson from the CPS told Mirror Football last month.

Fans could be banned from stadiums and from traveling to certain areas, such as pubs, at certain times.

"Tragedy-related abuse is when fans sing, chant or gesture offensive messages about disasters or accidents involving players or fans," added the spokesperson. "This can have a devastating impact on the bereaved and their communities."

Letby killed at least seven babies, and the true extent of her crimes are still being determined. She deliberately injected babies with air, force fed others milk and poisoned two of them with insulin. Some of the survivors have suffered life-changing injuries.

Mr Justice Goss told Letby: "There was a malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions. During the course of this trial you have coldly denied any responsibility for your wrongdoing. You have no remorse. There are no mitigating factors."
