Daniel Abed Khalife escaped from HMP Wandsworth shortly before 8am this morning, by strapping himself to the bottom of a delivery van.

The 21-year-old former soldier has been the subject of a national manhunt, as the country's borders have ground to a halt, to prevent his escape. Airports have seen lengthy queues as ports have been put on high alert, with one in Wales seeing cars searched.

Khalife was a former member of the British Armed Forces. However, the Ministry of Defence said he was discharged on May 22, of this year, after being held on remand for charges against him under the Terrorism Act 2000, and the Criminal Law Act 1977. Here is everything we know about him.

Khalife is accused of carrying out a hoax bomb attack on January 2, of this year, where he planted the fake bombs, three cannisters with wires protruding from them, at MOD Stafford military base. The BBC reported that in February, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard he allegedly left fake devices "with the intention of inducing in another the belief the item was likely to explode or ignite".

He was based at Beacon Barracks, Beaconside, Stafford, and also allegedly elicited information about personnel within the forces that could be "useful" to a terrorist. He is accused of collecting the “articles, notes, documents, or information” between May 1, 2019 and January 6, 2022.

He was originally charged with two offences on January 27 following an investigation by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, and a third allegation of breaking the Official Secrets Act was added at his Old Baily appearance. Mr Justice Jeremy Baker remanded Khalife in custody until his trial.

The 21-year-old escaped from HMP Wandsworth, a category B prison in south-west London, shortly before 8am this morning. He was on remand awaiting trial in relation to terrorism and Official Secrets Act offences.

How did he escape?

During their hunt for Khalife, police said he had connections in Kingston, London, and added it was likely he was still in the capital. The Telegraph later reported that his sister and mum lived in the area until a few years ago when they moved to Wales. It was later added that Khalife also has connections in the north west of England.

He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, red and white chequered trousers and brown steel toe cap boots and he was dressed as a chef during his escape. To get out of Wandsworth prison, Khalife accessed the kitchen, then strapped himself" to the bottom of a van to escape.
