Award-winning actress Sarah Lancashire was the star of the show at the National Television Awards on Tuesday night, with the former Coronation Street star taking home two huge awards.

Sarah - who baffled ITV viewers as she revealed her real accent during her acceptance speeches - not only won an award for best drama performance for her lead role in Happy Valley, but was overcome with emotion as she collected this year's special recognition gong at the annual ceremony.

But although Sarah, 58, is best known for her role as copper Catherine Cawood these days, the national treasure was once an aspiring actress talking headshots in the hoping of landing a role that would mark the beginning of a successful career in the entertainment industry.

In a resurfaced snap of the reigning queen of British drama, Sarah looked unrecognisable as she posed in her late twenties as she posed during a shoot in 1994. The former soap star work her blonde hair in loose pinned-up curls, smokey eye make-up and stared into the camera, wearing dark green velvet gown with black embroidered arms as she sat in the chair for the shoot.

Most British TV fans first met Sarah when she first appeared on the cobbled streets of Weatherfield, playing much-loved barmaid Raquel Wolstenhulme in ITV soap Coronation Street. Since walking away from the ITV soap in 1996 - returning briefly in 2000 - the mum-of-three has gone on to become a national treasure thanks to appearing in British productions such as Where The Heart Is, Clocking Off and Sally Wainwright’s Bafta award-winning crime drama Happy Valley.

After Sir Ian McKellen announced Sarah of the winner of this year's special recognition award at the NTAs on Tuesday night, the talented actress paid tribute to her loved ones and thanked her fans. Speaking on stage at London's O2 Arena, Sarah said: "You have no idea what it’s like to have so many lovely things said about you by so many people that you love and admire.

"I have been so very fortunate to spend my working life doing a job that I love, made possible by brilliantly talented people, producers, directors, writers, actors and I am exceptionally lucky to have enjoyed every moment of it. But there are also enablers, who stand quietly in the wings without expectation for credit, they are my family, my husband, my children, my friends, my agent… And of course a very vital component in all this is you, the audience, because without you all this would grind to a crashing halt."
