Harrowing footage shows the moment a passenger tried to board a ferry as it departed before he was apparently "pushed" to his death.

A video has been shared on Twitter showing a 36-year-old man, who has not been identified, rushing towards a ferry and running onto the ramp as it started to pull away from a Greek port. The Blue Horizon ferry was in the process of departing the port of Piraeus on Tuesday, September 5, when a latecomer was desperate to get on board the vessel. Two crew members can be seen standing on the ramp and stopping the man from boarding, turning him away and refusing to allow him access.

The man was pushed to the end of the ramp, but moments later he tried to gain access to the boat again. The ferry staff once again stopped him, but in doing so it appears the man was pushed backwards. In the footage the man can be seen falling into the water whilst the two crew members are looking down towards the water.

According to The Daily Mail, in a second video the man can be seen getting sucked into the water due to the strength of the ferry's propellers as it continued to sail away from the port. The man was recovered from the sea a short time later by the Greek Coast Guard and taken to the General State hospital of Nikaia where he was pronounced dead. Eyewitnesses claim the latecomer had been shoved off the ramp as he did not have a ticket, despite being able to buy one on board.

Following the tragedy, the Blue Horizon ferry was ordered to return to the port of Piraeus where the captain and crew members were arrested. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, the Minister of Shipping, told the Daily Mail: "I express my sadness for the tragic incident in the port of Piraeus in which one person lost his life. All the necessary actions are being taken by the Piraeus Port Authority to clarify the case and assign responsibility."
