An Australian tourist has been found dead at an airport in Thailand.

Gerard Wohlmuth had just landed for the first day of his holiday when he began to feel unwell on Tuesday, September 5, at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. The 82-year-old, who was born in Korneuburg, Austria, laid down on a bench to rest before he planned to catch a taxi to his hotel. However, Gerard lost consciousness shortly after this, and passengers reported the incident to the police after noticing Gerard lying unresponsive.

Airport police officers received a report at 8pm and arrived at the scene. The elderly man was then found lying on his back on the leather seats, wearing a black shirt, jeans and grey sneakers. It is believed by airport officials that the man had arrived to the airport on an afternoon flight, and had decided to rest when he felt lightheaded before passing away.

It is suspected by Police that Gerard had died of natural causes, and estimated that he had been dead for at least three hours. The area was then cordoned off so a further investigation could take place.

The 82 year old's body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine so that his cause of death could be determined. Officers have stated that the Australian Embassy has been informed of Gerard's passing and they have contacted his relatives.
