Happy Valley fans baffled by Sarah Lancashire's real accent as she sweeps NTAs
Happy Valley fans couldn't believe Sarah Lancashire's real accent as the BBC show triumphed at the National Television Awards.
The BBC drama was a huge hit with fans when the final series dropped earlier this year. Starring the talented James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce and Sarah Lancashire as Catherine Cawood, the final episodes came to a dramatic conclusion earlier this year that left fans on the edge of their seats. The show even broke records and its huge finale had 7.5 million viewers gripped.
Tonight, both James Norton and Sarah Lancashire were up for Best Drama performance and fans rushed to social media after finding out that Sarah Lancashire had not only won that award but Happy Valley triumphed in the Returning Drama category.
Fans were also left puzzled by her accent - with one writing: "I’m always shocked when I hear Sarah Lancashire's real voice #NTAs," as a second penned: "Me expecting Sarah Lancashire to have a Yorkshire accent but has a posh one instead."
A third added: "Hearing Sarah Lancashire's actual accent and not her Yorkshire accent is jarring. #NTAs #NTAs2023," as a fourth shared: "You mean to tell me Sarah Lancashire isn’t poppin’ about with a proper Yorkshire accent??? I am shook. #NTAs."
Happy Valley's Clare's death 'confirmed' after tragic final exchange with sisterIn her acceptance speech, she said: "Thank you so much for this. I have adored every scene, every moment of Happy Valley. And I know I will never forget it and all the brilliant people. The way the BBC have supported us. I have to say some things about Sally Wainwright. Her writing is so extraordinary, her characters are extraordinary."
There has been much demand for a new series of the BBC drama, with James Norton describing the ending as "sort of perfect". He said earlier this year: "The ending was sort of perfect, in a Sally Wainwright (writer) sort of way.
"It was fireworks but it wasn’t fireworks. It was sitting over a kitchen table and that is where Happy Valley really thrived. That’s the heart of the whole show. Cups of tea over kitchen tables in kitchens in Yorkshire. It’s not a big stunt set pieces on wires and jumping off cliffs, and guns and fireworks. It’s gentle, it’s domestic, it’s human.
"I mean, it genuinely was one of the most exciting, if not the most exciting moment I’ve had on a film set. It was very, very special. Sarah and I had received the scripts earlier and people who were there in the crew had received it, but it was kept fairly quiet as to who was able to read it. And it was shot quite late on in the shoot."
He added: "You’ve got Sally Wainwright at her absolute best. Sarah Lancashire, standing opposite me, giving her absolute best. These absolute heroes, these Queens of our industry, are the best there are. So it was an absolute privilege. I know actors throw those big words around a lot, but it was genuinely one of the most special moments of my career."
