Ryder Cup star embarrassed after dropping f-bomb to Luke Donald when making team

Ryder Cup rookie Nicolai Hojgaard could not help but drop the f-bomb when finding out he made the European team after being selected by captain Luke Donald.

Donald confirmed his skipper selections on Monday, and picked Hojgaard along with Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Sepp Straka and Ludvig Aberg. The decision to go with the Dane proved to be one of the surprises of the announcement, with many expecting Polish star Adrian Meronk to get the nod.

But, European skipper Donald opted to go with Hojgaard instead, having enjoyed an impressive run on the DP World Tour this season, as well as making the move Stateside to compete on the PGA Tour.

The Ryder Cup captain's call is a great honour for any golfer, and the moment Hojgaard found out was captured by the Ryder Cup Europe cameras. In a clip shared on social media, Donald was seen breaking the news to the 22-year-old, and it is fair to say the two-time DP World Tour winner could not contain his excitement.

The European skipper told Hojgaard: "Good playing in the last couple of weeks... I'm going to cut to the chase. I want you in Rome. How do you feel?" After a quick pause the Danish star then responds: "Oh my f*****g god!"

Clearly on cloud nine, the youngster added: "I was hoping for it to be honest but after today it was a little bit mixed. I can’t describe how this conversation feels! I’ve said all along and talking with Thomas (Bjorn) about this all season, I said to him the biggest goal was to obviously get to Rome.

"It’s been a long season but I can’t describe how it feels. One thing is to be part of it and one thing is trying to get that trophy back again. I can’t wait, I can’t wait Luke.” Hojgaard found form just at the right time, after securing two top-five finishes in the last two events of qualifying at the Czech Masters and European Masters.

Donald alluded to this when giving the reason behind the Dane's pick, whilst handing high praise for the world No. 78.

"Well, he's a young superstar," the European captain told Sky Sports. "The world is his oyster when it comes to golf. We're seeing the beginning of stuff he's already accomplished at such a young age.

"Nicolai, obviously part of my having six picks was I wanted some very in-form players, and what he did the last two weeks was very, very special." On the back of his pick the 22-year-old will take a week off and skip the upcoming Irish Open, but will return to action at next week's BMW PGA Championship ahead of his Ryder Cup debut.
