'My fiancée keeps choosing her dog over me - it's ruining our relationship'

Owning a dog is a big responsibility and most owners can become very, very attached to their pets, treating them no different than you would a child. But would you choose your pooch over your partner? This is the situation one upset man has found himself in.
Taking to Reddit to share his dilemma and find out if he had reacted accordingly, the 28-year-old man revealed: “I proposed recently to my girlfriend and we are planning the wedding to happen next year. My fiancée has a 5-year-old golden retriever mix. I had a few bad experiences with dogs as a kid. Her dog is very friendly and he gets all the attention from my fiancée.”
He went on to say that his partner is so dedicated to her beloved animal that she even turns down jobs that won’t let her work from home, and whenever he looks after the pooch she only ever messages to see how the dog is.
Following their happy news of getting engaged, the man revealed he had organised a trip to celebrate, booking a posh hotel and making reservations at a fancy restaurant. They had sorted for the woman’s dog to stay with a trusted friend so everything was taken care of, however, the woman had asked for updates every two hours so she knew her pet was OK.
Continuing the story, he went on: “I did my best to make it a wonderful weekend. We had reservations for 7pm at the restaurant. My fiancée didn't get ready until 6:40pm as she hadn't heard from the sitter. When we arrived at the restaurant, we had to wait 30 minutes for a table to open. When we sat down, my fiancée spent the entire dinner on her phone trying to get hold of the friend.”
Fed up with being ignored by his future wife, the man gave up, paid for the meal and got up from the table telling her he was going to wait in the car. He then added: “She came out 20 minutes later screaming at me for leaving her at the table alone. I yelled back that she ruined our engagement trip for putting the dog over us. We sat in silence all the way home and she's thinking about going to stay with her parents. I'm now being called an a**hole for leaving from the restaurant.”
The post quickly gathered attention from dog-lovers who rushed to share their thoughts on the matter. One person wrote: “Call off the engagement - she's already married to the dog. This is only a preview of what having kids with this woman will be like — helicopter mum to the extreme. Hard pass.”
Another user agreed, writing: “Not the a**hole, I love my pets to bits, but a daily update from a close friend who's watching her dog should have been enough. Seriously I don't expect or even want a two hour update about my human children when I have some time alone with my wife.”
But a third reader added: “I'm going against the grain here but you’re the a**hole, so is the unreliable 'friend'. This whole mess is because no one here is managing their expectations. You could've called the restaurant if you knew you were going to be late. You know, managing expectations. Plus, your gf is worrying about her pet who's been her companion for five years while you are worrying about... Food? Also, If she can be picky about the job she wants, what is it to you?! Are you the one financially supporting her while she is refusing well-paying jobs she cannot do from home? You’re the a**hole for not communicating /expecting gf to be a mind reader. And for being jealous of a dog.”
