Kevin Costner has opened up about his divorce from wife Christine Baumgartner admitting he is in a "horrible place."

The Yellowstone star attended a court hearing for his legal battle with his spouse of 18 years in Santa Barbara, California, on Friday (September 1). Christine has requested $161,592 per month in child support for their children Cayden, 16, Hayes, 14, and Grace, 13.

Kevin however believes he should only have to pay $60,000 per month, which led to Christine's lawyers accusing him of earning more money than he has previously admitted to. The Bodyguard star addressed the claim with sarcasm responding: "Oh good, we'll have to have a treasure hunt to find it."

Outside of the courthouse he then addressed the issue further as he spoke to Access Hollywood confessing to the gravity of the situation. He said: "Were you laughing? I wasn't. This is a horrible place to be but this is where we're at.

"It feels so bad, we're talking about somebody I love on the other side... I just can't." He continued to admit that he "of course" still has love for Christine and that he is hopeful "everybody" wants the divorce to be settled as soon as possible.

Earlier this week Kevin's legal team accused Christine of attempting to go after his character as the divorce progresses. Legal documents obtained by Fox News on Thursday saw his lawyers state that "Christine's relentless ‘jihad' against Kevin's character adds a level of animosity to this proceeding that is wholly unnecessary, and meant to distract from the intellectual exercise at hand."

The purpose of the court hearings is to hash out the terms of an ample child support agreement for Christine. A judge previously issued a temporary ruling that stated that Oscar winner Kevin would have to pay her $129,755 per month according to court documents obtained by TMZ.

Christine argued in a legal brief filed by her team on August 31 as obtained by US Weekly, that she wants the sum she is paid for her children to be "at a level commensurate with Kevin's considerable wealth."

Her lawyers wrote: "Because the children fly on private aircraft to go on luxury vacations when they are with their father, the Family Code dictates that Kevin should pay sufficient child support to Christine so that the children can go on comparable vacations when they are with her. This is true even if the child support payments also improve Christine's lifestyle."

The documents went on to state that the requested amount was needed to help christine provide a "relatively comparable" lifestyle to Kevin for their children. They added: "In this case, the guideline child support requested by Christine of $175,057 per month will not be sufficient to replicate Kevin's lifestyle, but it will be sufficient to allow her to provide a lifestyle for the children which is relatively comparable."
