Super Bowl winner's wife makes honest assessment about comment on husband's role
Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly, has explained why she regrets recent comments she made about her husband.
Stafford is currently preparing for the 2023 NFL season with the Los Angeles Rams. The 35-year-old veteran quarterback has been in the league since 2009 and this will be his third year in California with the Rams.
The QB spent the first 12 years of his career with the Detroit Lions, but is now the franchise player in Los Angeles. However, recent comments from his wife made the headlines in recent days.
Kelly Stafford hosts a podcast, ‘The Morning After with Kelly Stafford’ and in a recent episode, she spoke about her husband. The comments claimed that the Rams quarterback had been struggling to connect with his teammates as the Rams put together a new-look roster.
However, Kelly recently addressed the comments she made and admitted that it was a mistake to say what she did. The couple have been married since 2015, and she acknowledged that it was an error to speak about her husband’s football struggles in public.

“I spoke on a topic that I think, it’s relatable, to the fact that it’s hard to relate to someone who is ten years younger than you,” Kelly told Click on Detroit. “And I do think that’s entirely true. But I’m not in an NFL locker room, I’m not spending every day with these teammates.
“That was tough. I say all the time, probably not the best if your wife’s name is in the media, if it’s talking about sports.
“I felt pretty bad last week. I put my foot in my mouth pretty good last week.”
Stafford helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in February 2022, but is faced with the challenge of playing alongside a new team in LA this year. As he enters the second year of a four-year contract extension he signed in March 2022 he will be playing a number of new players including many first year professionals.
Kelly’s initial comments claimed that her husband had told her that it was a challenge dealing with the amount of changes in the locker room this season.
“It’s kind of crazy, so Matthew’s been in the league for a long time,” Kelly said in her initial comments on her podcast released earlier this week. “He’s like, ‘The difference in the locker room has changed so significantly,’ and they have a lot of rookies on their team this year, they’re very young.
“But, he’s like, ‘I feel like I can’t connect.’ Because in the old days, you’d come out of practice, you’d shower, people would be playing cards, people would be interacting. Who knows what they’re doing but they’re doing something together, they’re playing ping pong, they have a tournament going on, they’re at least talking.
“He said now, they get done with practice, get done meetings during training camp, and they go straight to their phones, like no one looks up from their phones.”
