Meg Ryan 'looks very different' as fans thrilled over upcoming rom-com comeback

Meg Ryan has thrilled fans with the release of a trailer for her upcoming return to romantic comedy films, with the project marking her first acting role in around eight years.

The actor, 61, is best known for her roles in rom-coms like When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You've Got Mail (1998). She hasn't worked in the genre for more than a decade though and she last appeared on screen in an acting role in the drama film Ithaca (2015).

She's set to make a comeback to the genre with the release of the upcoming film What Happens Later in the coming months. The project - scheduled to be released later this year - stars Meg alongside fellow actor David Duchovny, 63.

Meg teased the upcoming film - which she has directed and reportedly co-written - on Instagram in May last year. She shared a poster at the time, which revealed that she'd appear alongside the X-Files star David in a leading role.

The trailer has now been released by Bleecker Street, with the film company having posted it on X - formerly known as Twitter - earlier this week. It was announced that the film will be released on October 13 in the post on the platform.

It reveals that Meg and David play a former couple who run into each other at an airport, where their respective flights get delayed. The trailer teases that they will delve into their break-up and open up about their feelings for each other.

The post that promoted the film on X teased: "[Meg and David] star in #WhatHappensLater, a swoon-worthy story of old flames rekindled amidst the magic of missed connections, directed by Meg Ryan. Only in theaters October 13!"

The trailer has been viewed more than a million times in the post and has amassed thousands of likes on the platform. It has prompted reaction from viewers, who shared their thoughts on the video promoting the upcoming film.

Some people instead took to the opportunity to comment on her appearance, suggesting that she looks different. One person responded to the film's trailer: "I can not get passed ... that she doesn't even look like herself anymore."

"I like that the title cards had to identify who Meg Ryan is and what she was in because no one recognizes her anymore," tweeted another person. A third said: "She looks very unlike herself, sadly. I was hoping she would look better. But her voice is the same and her energy is too. So that's nice."

And although others also suggested she looked different, several fans were complimentary. One person wrote: "Meg looks great!" Another said: "Look at the very last shot of Meg in this trailer. It's like she lost 20 years. Always beautiful."

Sharing their thoughts, another person tweeted in their reply: "I love that they are using Actors that have aged!" The person further commented in their post on the platform: "They DO exist and we DO Connect with our Peers on Screen."

Meg has attracted attention and commentary about her appearance over the years, with her having previously addressed discussion about her looks in an interview with Porter magazine in 2015, as reported by the Evening Standard.

She told the outlet at the time during the interview: "There are more important conversations than how women look and how they are ageing. [...] I love my life right now. [...] I love the person I've become, the one I've evolved into."
