While there are plenty of cut-price holidays available all year round, the end of the busy summer holiday season is the best time to find great deals on luggage.

As demand starts to wain, many stores will be keen to clear their shelves at discount prices to make room for winter essentials in the run-up to Christmas. The same idea applies to online retailers too, as their insistence to sell off surplus stock is a win-win for savvy travellers looking to save money on top-quality luggage.

There are some great deals to be found on Antler, Samsonite, Away, Tripp and other well-known brands with more than £100 off the RRP on some suitcases.

Whether you are heading off for some winter sun, or waiting until next year to take to the skies, buying your new luggage now could help you see big savings.

From cabin bags and carry-ons to family-size suitcases, a bargain case could be a brilliant buy if you know what you are looking for.

To help you find low-cost luggage that will go the distance, we've compiled seven top tips to consider when buying new luggage.

1. Do your research

Don't be drawn in by pretty patterns and whistles and bells, check out the quality and practicality of the brand along with user reviews before you commit to purchase. Spending a little more on good quality pieces of luggage will save you hundreds of pounds in the long run.

2. Compare prices

If a deal looks too good to be true then chances are it probably is. If you have found a range or piece of luggage that you like, search sites like Amazon to see how many different vendors are selling it so you can see how good any reductions actually are.

3. Check the weight

One of the most important functions of any suitcase is that it is able to transport your belongings while being easy to manoeuvre. If it feels like it weighs a ton when it is empty, it will be difficult to lift and pull when full.

Suitcases should also be lightweight in design to help reduce the risk of excess baggage fees at the airport and to ensure that they are able to meet the weight restrictions of your chosen airline.

4. Check the dimensions

The sheer size of your case must be able to meet airline baggage restrictions in order for you to be able to fly. Different airlines have varying guidelines, but the good news is that most luggage manufacturers are aware of this and build their cases to suit.

While you won't need to walk around the shop with a tape measure, it is still worth checking the manufacturer's measurements against the guidelines of your flight operator.

5. Keep it locked

Many modern suitcases come with a TSA-approved lock built in. This extra feature might cost a little more, but it will help to keep your most important items safe. Designed to allow security agents access to your belongings without having to break the lock, your case can fly through security in countries where TSA agents operate.

At the very least, ensure that your luggage has a lock with a combination or digital code as teeny tiny padlock keys are easy to lose in transit.

6. Wheels and handles

All of the very best suitcases come with wheels these days. Whether you opt for two wheels or four, spinner suitcases are so much easier to traverse through the terminal when you can roll them along with you.

You don't need to pay through the nose for fancy wheel components, but the suitcase you choose should be a smooth roller for sure.

7. Buy the best you can afford

If you want your luggage to last, never scrimp on the quality. Cheaper pieces may look fashionable and super cool, but it is the more traditional, streamlined cases that will prove to be more reliable no matter how many miles you fly.

The old adage says "buy cheap, buy twice" which is invariably true, so stick to high-end brands like Samsonite, Tripp, Antler, American Tourister and others where you can.
