People named David, Paul, and John, are the UK's biggest complainers, research has found.

New figures have analysed one-star reviews left on consumer review website, Trustpilot – and found that 20,020 of these negative reviews have been left by men named David since the site launched in 2007.

This placed the name David at the top of the list for one-star reviews – ahead of 19,562 reviews from men named Paul, 18,632 from the name John, and 16,495 from Marks.

In fact, two-thirds of the names on the top 15 list are traditionally male names – with Steve, Michael, Andrew, and Richard also featuring.

Meanwhile, the only traditionally female names that made the list are Sarah, in seventh place with 13,971 one-star reviews, and Emma, coming in 14th place with 9,838 negative reviews.

Carolyn Jameson, spokeswoman for the global review platform, said: “These reviewers’ commitment to posting their frustrated feedback on Trustpilot has helped thousands of businesses improve their service, and millions of consumers avoid customer service catastrophes.

“It’s vitally important that businesses engage with the negatives, showing consumers they are keen to rectify the potential issues, and improve from the feedback they receive.

“Consumers don’t expect businesses to be perfect – but they do want them to care, and to make them feel valued and listened to.

“With the right approach, businesses can turn Difficult Davids into Satisfied Susans – who are among those who write the most positive reviews.”

Despite 73% of consumer feedback about businesses being positive, 14% still give a one-star review of their experience with businesses on the platform.

And in addition to being the biggest complainer overall, further analysis found Davids are also most likely to leave the most one-star reviews in several of the review platform’s retail sectors.

These included “electronics and technology”, “home and garden”, and “money and insurance”.

Meanwhile, women named Sarah leave the most one-star reviews in the “shopping and fashion”, and “beauty and wellbeing” categories.
