Hyenas is the latest contender in the extraction shooter space from Total War and Alien Isolation studio Creative Assembly, and it's holding a closed beta this week.

Sega's lineup at Gamescom was arguably the strongest of anyone at the show. I got to go hands-on with Like a Dragon Gaiden, and check out Sonic's latest adventure, Sonic Superstars. I also got to go hands-on the two latest projects in one of my all-time favourite series, Persona, and preview Persona 5 Tactica as well as playing Persona 3 Reload. And yet, despite how good all of those games were, the biggest shocker from Sega's showing had to be Hyenas – a new extraction shooter from Total War creator Creative Assembly, which completely took me by surprise.

Luckily for us, we don't have to wait too long to get our hands on Hyenas, as Sega is holding an open beta for the game this week. Despite the fact that the Hyenas release is slated for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, the Hyenas closed beta is unfortunately only going to be available on PC (like the alpha tests earlier this year).

Sega hasn't announced future betas for the game or whether any potential future betas will let console players join in the fun, but we've reached out for comment and will update you when we know more

Joining the Hyenas closed beta is actually fairly simple. There's no convoluted account system where you have to go to some website and fill in a form. To sign up for the Hyenas closed beta, all you need to do is head to the game's Steam store page, find the tab that says 'Join the Hyenas Playtest' and hit the big green 'Request Access' button. You'll be notified if you've been chosen to head to Mars to loot some ships, simply download it and enjoy.

The Hyenas closed beta kicks off on Thursday, August 31 at 3pm BST / 10am EDT / 7am PDT. Sega is being fairly generous with the window as it announced that the Hyenas beta will be running for just under two weeks and will end on Monday, September 11. Although no exact end time has been confirmed we would assume it'll be until 3pm BST / 10am EDT / 7am PDT on Monday, September 11, but we'll update you as soon as the exact end time is announced by Creative Assembly.
