Let's be honest, waking up to the sound of your partner snoring in the middle of the night is one of the most annoying parts about sharing a bed. And if you're the one who snores, it can be frustrating knowing that you can't control what you do when you're asleep, no matter how much you want to make the nights easier for those around you.

But thankfully, you don't have to accept your fate as a snorer, because according to health and nutrition experts, you could actually cut down on how much you snore simply by making some changes to your diet. Apparently, there are certain foods you shouldn't eat before bedtime if you want to stop snoring - including dairy products and fast food.

Certain foods can trigger snoring because they make the body produce more mucus and trigger inflammation in the nasal passages, resulting in loud wheezing and rattling during bedtime. Anti-inflammatory foods such as vegetables, fruits, salmon, and nuts are therefore great products to eat before bed to keep snoring to a minimum, but others should be avoided at all costs.

Ashleigh Tosh, from Prepped Pots powered by MuscleFood.com, told the Daily Star: "Although changing your diet may not entirely stop you from snoring, it can go a long way in helping you manage and reduce the symptoms. If you're looking for a better night's sleep or wish to spare your partner from staying up until the wee hours of the night then take a look at your diet and try to cut out foods that can trigger snoring.

"By reducing your intake of processed foods, dairy, wheat and sugar and incorporating more anti-inflammatory foods into your diet, you can prevent blockages in the airways and sinuses and encourage better flow of air during sleep."

So what foods should you avoid before getting into bed for a good night's sleep? Well, first up is dairy products. You should cut out cheese, yoghurt, and ice cream before bed, as the lactose found in dairy products increases the production of mucus which can contribute to snoring.

You should also ditch sugary foods and drinks such as sweets, cookies, and soft drinks, as processed sugar can also lead to inflammation in your throat and nasal passages. The same can be said for wheat-based products including breads and pastries, which not only contribute to inflammation but also boost the molecules that cause mucus production.

Fast food should never be eaten before bed if you want to stop snoring, as the highly processed food can cause congestion in the respiratory system. Consuming large meals before bed can also cause indigestion, leading to disrupted sleep patterns and potentially worsening snoring.

And finally, you should cut down on the late-night snacking on high-fat meat. According to the experts, fatty cuts of meat can cause people to snore because the high protein content and saturated fats trigger phlegm production. You should try swapping to lean meats in general and avoid meat entirely just before going to sleep.

While cutting out some foods could help reduce your snoring, other factors including quitting smoking, losing excess weight, and avoiding alcohol can also help. Furthermore, although occasional snoring is harmless, if it's chronic, it could be a sign of sleep apnea, decreased blood oxygen levels, high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
