Sunday Brunch host mortified over awkward comment to Paralympian with one hand

Sunday Brunch host Tim Lovejoy was left red-faced after making an awkward comment to a Paralympian champion.

The Channel 4 presenter was hosting the show on Sunday, August 27 with Miquita Oliver, who was standing in for regular presenter Simon Rimmer after he suddenly felt unwell and couldn’t work.

Guests on the show included Steps singer Claire Richards, comedian Jamali Maddix and Paralympic gold medallist Lauren Steadman, who is one of the most successful triathletes of all time.

During the show, Tim asked Lauren about her cooking techniques and mimed spinning with his hands as he asked her: “Did you get a brown paper bag and do that.” Laura then quipped back: “Well, I’ve only got one hand so...”

As the studio erupted into laughter, Tim held his hand to his head in disbelief at what he’d just said and immediately apologised saying: “I’m so sorry Lauren, I’m so sorry. I’m so embarrassed.”

Seeing the funnyside, Laura was in fits of giggles herself and told him: “Don’t worry. I really enjoyed it, it’s fine.” Miquita then stepped in to try and save her colleague from further embarrassment and said: “Usually he’s in this role and I’m here. He’s out of his depth."

Sharing the clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, after the show, Lauren told her followers: “I am still dying inside.” Commenting underneath, one fan wrote: “Quality blooper”, while another simply said: “Bless him x.” A third commented: “Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for posting this.”

Although the show still went ahead on Sunday after Miquita stepped in to co-host last-minute, it almost didn’t. Tim informed viewers that regular host Simon was “feeling poorly” and had agreed with bosses to spend the day at home.

Simon, 60, has hosted the popular show since 2012 alongside Tim, taking a break earlier this year when he lost his beloved father. The chef's absence on Bank Holiday weekend comes after he revealed a shock 'feud' with Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt.

Matt has fronted Saturday Kitchen on show since 2016 when he took over from James Martin. Simon has joked that he and Tim are 'at war' with Matt as he spoke about their alleged rivalry.

Simon said he once tried to get Matt removed from the billing of food festival Pub in the Park. Speaking to James Golding on his Always In Season podcast, Simon said: "As you know on we have sort of mock rivalry with Saturday Kitchen so I spoke to Chris and said, 'Listen I think what you need to do is ditch Matt Tebbutt from all Pub in the Parks and let me take over his role'."

The alleged 'feud' kicked off in 2020 when Simon described Saturday Kitchen as a 'weaker version' of his Channel 4 show with Lovejoy.

"At the end of the day, they're a weaker version of what we do," Simon joked during an appearance on Radio X show. "You sit there and you look at Tebbutt with his posh face and you go, 'Come on Tebbutt. Get a grip. You're a lazy presenter. Work a bit harder'."

However, Matt has previously stated there is no drama between the two teams as they cater to very different audiences. He also said he and Simon were united in their concern for how long their respective shows would continue to stay on air.
