Luca Bish has revealed he had “no idea” how to make the dishes that helped win him a place in the Celebrity MasterChef semi-final.

The Love Island runner-up impressed with his pork fillet and selection of seafood in the quarter-final of the BBC One culinary skills contest last week. But Luca, 29, admits he didn’t know how to cook fish, even though he used to be a fishmonger. He said: “You know when you’re a kid at school, and you walk into exams thinking: ‘I’ve done enough’ - then open the first page and go: ‘WHAT is going on?’ MasterChef was a bit like that.

“The pork... I had no idea, and then for the dinner dish, I cooked fish, which I can handle but had no idea how to cook it. But when I made a mistake in that kitchen it was all about trying to disguise it, act cool at all times, and just go: ‘That was meant to happen.’ I definitely got one mistake past John and Gregg, a big one. I don’t know if you’ll see it because I disguised it so well. In the end I even got complimented in the mistake - so I was buzzing after that.”

Luca felt “done with TV” after Love Island because of negative comments. But MasterChef changed that. He said: “After Love Island, I did feel done with TV. I didn’t get the fairest edit and perhaps naively when I signed up, I didn’t realise I was giving people permission to portray me how they wanted to.

“When I came out, for every 100 good comments, there was that one bad one and I was done with dealing with that. I lost myself a bit. But when MasterChef came along, I didn’t really see it as reality TV. You are showcasing a skill, and it’s a really well respected show, so it was a privilege to be asked to take part in it.

“And I have definitely fallen in love with cooking now - putting something on someone’s plate and getting good feedback is a nice feeling. So it’s been a really good experience - my best time being on TV yet.” Luca will now compete against Max George, Amy Walsh, Marcus Brigstocke, Mica Ven, Jamelia, Shazia Mirza and Wynne Evans for a place in the final.
