Leeds Festival 2023 got off to a dramatic start as one performer went 'missing' on the first day and failed to show up for his slot on stage.

Eager fans had been waiting to see rapper Lil TJay take to the Main Stage West at 4:35pm on Friday. However, the American star, 22, failed to show up for his scheduled time with it later emerging the musician was a no-show at the festival altogether.

Festival organisers said they were 'unable to contact him' to find out what had gone wrong.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, Lil Tjay hasn’t arrived on site and we haven’t been able to contact him. We hope he will arrive soon." The message was displayed on huge screens to the side of the stage, relaying the message to the confused crowd who had gathered to watch.

Revellers began to tweet their fury following the change to schedule. Disgruntled festival-goers described the turn of events as 'shocking' and 'disappointing.'

Another tweeted directly to the rapper, telling the US star: "Disgusting u didn’t turn up to Leeds! Saw a lot of ur fans who were buzzing to see u. If that’s how u treat ur fans f*ck u bro disgusting."

Another fan who had tickets for the Reading event, where Lil TJay is expected to play later this weekend added: "Lil Tjay didn’t show to Leeds? Nah man if he does that Sunday…"

The no-show adds more chaos to the Bank Holiday festival after Trippe Redd cancelled his headline performance at the 11th hour.

In a statement the star apologised to fans saying he was 'too ill' to perform. He wrote: "I’m so sorry to announce that I can’t perform this weekend. I was really looking forward to coming to Reading & Leeds… But due to illness I have to cancel my visit to the UK. I hope to see you soon!"

Reading and Leeds bosses said they wished the star a 'speedy recovery.'

This weekend Billie Eilish becomes the youngest solo artist to headline the festival as she performs alongside acts including The Killers, Sam Fender, Foals and Imagine Dragons.

Lewis Capaldi had been booked as a headliner but was forced to pull out of the festival in July.

The hitmaker recently made the tough decision to step back from the limelight after admitting to struggling with his Tourettes following a performance at Glastonbury.

The 1975 were announced as his replacement with the band now taking to the dual stages to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album. The group will be performing at Reading on August 25 and taking to the Main Stage West at Leeds on August 26.
