Happy Mondays' Rowetta has admitted she had a secret feud with frontman Shaun Ryder – but now, the pair are now "better than ever".

The singer joined the Manchester-based band in 1990 at the peak of their success with huge hits like Step On and Kinky Afro. However, the group split and reformed multiple times over the decade and even starred in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People as a fictionalised depiction of the band. Rowetta took a break from Happy Mondays in the early 2000s as she appeared on The X-Factor and focused on other projects.

Yet in 2012, the much-loved original line-up all came back together once more. Announcing their comeback, Shaun declared on This Morning that amends had been made, friendships reinstated and that it was just like the old days, but without the madness. The reunion was only set to be for one year, but they have been touring ever since.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror about how they have maintained their relationship with each other for so long, Rowetta confessed she and Shaun were embroiled in a secret feud. She said: "Well, we split up for years, which always helps. We didn't speak for a long time, myself and Shaun. So now we're getting on really, really better than ever. Because I think it does help when you're going through your problems and you do fall out, and you're falling out over nothing sometimes, that if you have a break. The last gig we did, we smiled, myself and Sean, we smiled the whole way through."

She added: "I've never smiled so much on stage in my life. I just felt, we were just in a really happy place on stage and everything else that goes on, whether it's to do with the band or to do with your family life or relationships, it didn't exist. That's what going on stage used to be like for me and it really felt like that the other night. And along may it continue, it's just been getting better and better going on stage."

Rowetta also shared her close bond with Bez, saying: "He's my best friend, I was his best woman at his wedding and we're like brother and sister. When we get on stage, it's still as much fun as it ever was, if not more." The Manchester singer revealed the band often travel on their own to gigs now. She said: "Touring life, it's become a lot easier really, mainly because Shaun and Bez don't get on the bus with all their friends and families. We used to have a lot of people on the bus. It's better for us sometimes to travel separately and because we're just better for the gigs and take it a little bit more seriously." Rowetta added: "Happy Mondays is family to me. It's a massive part of my life."

Speaking previously, Rowetta said that Shaun was not very approachable when the band split and soon a deep rift kept them apart. But it was Shaun's stint on I’m A Celebrity, that made Rowetta realise that he was a different person and someone that she would like to get to know again.

Happy Mondays will be performing at the Rock N Roll Circus in Sheffield on Friday 1 September, more information can be found here.
