A bomb squad responded to the Fulton County Jail after a threat was called in following the historic fourth arrest of former US president Donald Trump.

The threat occurred at the courthouse, not the jail where Trump turned himself over to the authorities late Thursday evening. The threat was a hoax as authorities found nothing at the courthouse, according to the Fulton County sheriff. He also had a historic mugshot taken of him, which was the first ever taken of a former American president.

Trump was charged with 13 felony counts related to his illegal scheme to overturn the 2020 election. Georgia was an integral battleground in that presidential race, narrowly allowing incumbent President Joe Biden to secure his victory.

He had flown in on his private Boeing 757 and deplaned amid media fanfare at around 7pm. He was wearing his signature white shirt and red tie and gave a small wave, smile and thumbs up to everyone there as he descended the steps of his plane.

He was arrested at around 7.40pm, then released moments later. A bond corporation called Foster Bail Bonds LLC, based in Lawrenceville, paid the $200,000 fee to have him released.

During the proceedings, he told authorities that he was 6 foot 3 inches tall (1.9 metres) and 215 pounds (97.5 kg). They noted his blue eyes and his "strawberry or blond hair."

Minutes later, he was back on the tarmac at the airport, addressing reporters following his booking, but not before giving a thumbs up and flashing a brief smile to onlookers at the decrepit jail.

"You should be able to challenge an election," he said, reiterating his stance that he's innocent and "did nothing wrong." He called Thursday's proceedings, and those of all four of his indictments, a "travesty of justice."

He then boarded his private Boeing 757 and flew back to New Jersey.

Trump's indictments have become a staple of his election campaign — the 2024 presidential hopeful is vying for another term in the Oval Office, four years after being ousted from it in the very election that he now finds himself charged for trying to overturn. And they've drawn attention away from the other candidates, who just had a debate on Wednesday.

Trump has been indicted on four separate occasions this year. He is currently facing four felonious charges in the US District Court of Columbia, including one for conspiring to defraud the United States, for allegedly inciting a riot on January 6, 2021 at the United States Capital; Trump has also been charged with 40 felonious charges, including counts of obstruction-related crimes, under the US Espionage Act in connection to a classified documents case in which he illegally retained several boxes of classified documents from the White House; Lastly, Trump is facing 34 felonious counts of falsifying business records in connection to a hush-money case in which he paid off Porn Star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.
