The 16-year-old teenager behind the Aled Jones' robbery admitted he threatened to cut off the singer's arm while stealing his £17,000 Rolex watch in broad daylight.

Welsh singer Aled, 52, and his son Lucas were walking along Chiswick High Road in west London at 5.40pm on July 7 when a teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, attacked him and ran off with his watch.

After gathering CCTV data, the teenager was found and arrested at his west London home. During his arrest, he wore a black Nike tracksuit and wore the trainers that were seen in the footage. A machete was also found in his room, a court heard. The teen was due to stand trial at Wimbledon Youth Court on Thursday, but pled guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon after turning up late – with his trial already underway.

Prosecutor Robert Simpson earlier told the court: “The complainant, who is Aled Jones, was walking with his son when he was approached by a youth dressed in a black tracksuit top and bottoms and wearing black trainers. (The defendant) produced a knife in the form of a machete from his tracksuit bottoms and threatened to cut off his arm and made various other threats in order to obtain the Rolex watch Aled Jones was wearing. Aled Jones immediately handed it over and the defendant made off.” The court was told Jones' son picked out the defendant in an identity parade.

The singer and his son nodded and thanked court staff when he was told the teenager pleaded guilty. They waited on a video link for close to two hours to give evidence. Meanwhile, the teenager only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth, and address and to reply "guilty" to each charge. The case will next be heard at Ealing Youth Court on September 12 but the judge told the defendant he could not guarantee the case will not be sent to the crown court from there.

Last month, the Metropolitan Police released a statement after the attack. In a statement to The Mirror, they said: "A boy has been charged with a robbery in Chiswick. Following an investigation by detectives from the West Area Command Unit, a 16-year-old from Felltham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged on Friday, 14 July with one count of robbery.

"He was kept in custody at appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court the next day. He has been bailed to appear at Wimbledon Youth Court for trial on Thursday, 24 August. The charge follows a robbery on Friday, 7 July on Chiswick Road, W4. At about 17:40hrs a 52-year-old man reported he had been approached by a male who threatened him with a machete and demanded his watch."
