Call The Midwife's Sister Monica Joan actress Judy Parfitt looks unrecognisable in a glam throwback snap that was taken 50 years ago.

The actress, 87, is now best known for her role in the period drama portraying Sister Monica Joan for the past ten years. However, she had a supporting role in BBC's David Copperfield in 1966 as well as an appearance in the 1969 film adaptation of Hamlet. Judy trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she graduated in 1953.

In a glamorous throwback picture of Judy from the 60s, she looks completely different from her stern-faced character in Call The Midwife. Judy posed against a tree in the black and white snap as her voluminous hair dark hair cascaded down her back. She wore a floral shift dress and flawless makeup as she stared out into the distance in the image.

Another picture shows Judy in a scene from the television drama A Drug on the Market from 1967. By then, she sported a totally different hair-do with a lighter colour and short cut. The actress wore minimal makeup but paired a red lip with a blue floral shirt. Judy's career has spanned over five decades, but she has become best known to viewers for her character Sister Monica.

She has appeared in the BBC series, which follows a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London, since it's first episode back in 2012. Sister Monica has become a staple character in the show but there were fears for her in the latest series as her health took a turn for the worst.

In the past, Judy has spoke about her role as kindhearted Sister Monica Joan. The TV star told Radio Times: "She comes from a good family and she's an innocent. She's very eccentric but she's also getting dementia so she's in and out of reality which makes it really interesting to play because it's a very difficult line to get through."

Earlier this year, the cast revealed that a thirteenth series is on the way as they reunited for filming. The twelfth series came to an end at the start of the year but fans don't have to worry as it looks like another is on the way soon. Show bosses have dropped a huge hint about the next series as they shared a social media post. They revealed that the cast have reunited as they prepare to film the next episodes.

A spokesperson said on Facebook: "Since our tumultuous season 12 finished airing at the end of February, our intrepid team have been grabbing the chance to rest up, relax, or else fit in some quick theatrical work before filming commences again! But today marked an important celebration – our team gathered at a plush venue in the west end of London for their first get-together before the cameras roll again and the scripts drop through the doors.

"We hear the producers organised the team a wonderful meal - there were speeches, lots of laughter and many reunion hugs!" The caption concluded: "Meanwhile, the costume fittings have begun, locations are being scouted, sets painted - all in readiness for our brand new collection of stories! The countdown begins!! Call the Midwife returns with a new Christmas Special and series 13 in 2024."
