Barney the foal was found close to death in a pile of rubble - but just look at him now. The tiny horse thought to be five-months-old was discovered unconscious, lying upside down on a pile of rocks and rubbish in December.

The colt was emaciated underneath his thick coat and had painful pressure sores all over his body. But luckily he was rescued just in time and nursed back to health at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Essex, the UK's largest horse charity.

Jo Franklin from Redwings said: "It's wonderful to see him now - he's bright and has a character, skipping and bucking around his stable. He's doing so well."

Did you know?

How do you know if your dog really loves you? They may look at you with puppy dog eyes, snuggle up and smother you with affection, but is it you, or are they just angling for a treat.

Experts from dog food company ProDog Raw have revealed some different signs to look for:

  • Focus - if your dog comes back to you when you call despite being distracted by another dog on a walk this reflects a strong bond.

  • Excitement - if your dog displays visible enthusiasm the minute you walk through the door, it's a clear indicator that you are important to them.

  • Playful body language - if your dog wags in your company, lays by you, pricks their ears up, and looks to you in new situations, you can relax in the knowledge they love you.

  • Seeks you out - If your dog looks out for you in a crowd, this is a good indicator that they’re not only recognising you, but that they like you.

You've heard of leaves on the line and the wrong kind of snow, but rail bosses in London had a new excuse for delays this month - a hound up ahead.

Learner train driver Stefan Hug, 32, has been praised for his courage and quick thinking when a dog ran out onto the tracks ahead of him.

Stefan, who only started learning to drive a train last month, was in the middle of a lesson with instructor Kevin Timmins when something small and black caught his eye.

Stefan, who quickly realised it was a small dog running alongside the train, said: "I think because you talk about it so many times, the procedure just kicks in and you just know you need to bring the train to a stand, take a deep breath and think logically of the next thing to do."

After stopping his Southern service from Beckenham Junction to London Bridge, Stefan radioed signals controllers before jumping out of his cab to scoop up the tiny bundle.

Stefan and Kevin were relieved to see she was uninjured and wagging her tail. As no owner has come forward to claim her, she was handed into the care of British Transport Police.

Kevin was full of praise for his trainee: "It was really good to see Stefan do those procedures correctly, and I'm really proud of him."

He added: "It's so easy for dogs to run off and run on the rails and it's very hard to get them back. It does put a lot of people in danger and it's a big operation to get them off the tracks.

"Hopefully, this is a good wake-up call to keep all of your animals close to you on leashes whilst you're on railway property."

This puts a whole new spin on the word 'sheepdog'. Flaus the one-year-old lamb is convinced he's a canine, even performing tricks such as jumping through hoops as though he's competing at Crufts.

Owner Millie Clark at Yew Tree Farm School says: "I wanted to get the animals to do some tricks for when our one-to-one students who are outside mainstream education come to visit.

"It became clear that Flaus loved showing off while the other sheep look a bit confused when he starts to pretend he is a dog and gets excited to see me."

Farm School director Edwina Beeney adds: "I always knew pigs were intelligent but I never thought a sheep would be capable of something like this."

A 12kg cat described as the biggest rescuers had ever seen has lost a third of her bodyweight as she battles back to health.

When Bertha was taken to an RSPCA centre in October, she was matted, obese and could not even fit through a cat flap.

Now she is just under 9kg, well on the way to hitting the vets' target of 7.9kg.
