BBC Breakfast viewers were delighted with Sally Nugent’s replacement after the show underwent a shake-up over the summer holidays.

Host Sally Nugent, who has been a regular fixture on the red sofa since 2021, usually presents the show alongside co-host Jon Kay, but she was replaced by a new face on Wednesday. Business correspondent Victoria Valentine was instead paired with Jon, and she went down a storm with fans, who called for the new presenting duo to be on the early morning show permanently.

“Can we have the wonderful Victoria Valentine every day please?” one wrote on Twitter, as another agreed: “Please can you make Jon Kay and Victoria Valentine a permanent pairing?#BBCBreakfast.” While another keen viewer wanted Victoria, who usually hosts BBC World News, given regular presenting duties. “I will watch #BBCBreakfast everyday if Victoria Valentine was presenting,” they wrote.

“Victoria is doing well, surely she’s next in line for the top job,” another predicted, while others were impressed with the chemistry between Victoria and Jon. “Such a lovely relaxed vibe on breakfast this morning maybe John & Victoria could be a permanent duo,” they mused. “I must say Victoria is a breath of fresh air on BBC1 breakfast this morning #BBCBreakfast,” one viewer added, as another said it was “an absolute pleasure” seeing her on the sofa.

“Waking up to BBC breakfast and seeing Victoria on the sofa always makes me smile.......normally I have to get up at 5 to watch the business news,” one fan wrote. However, some were keen to see Sally return to the sofa, and looked forward to seeing her again. “She was nice - but I have to say I prefer Sally,” one wrote, as another joked: “What you done with Sally?”

Other BBC Breakfast stars have been missing from the show over the last few weeks, including weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who was replaced by Sarah Keith-Lucas, and Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty, who have been absent as they also took time off. Jon managed to escape on a lavish holiday to Corsica before the summer holidays began, leading viewers to suggest the hosts were simply taking it in turns to go on a well-deserved break.

Earlier this month, Sally landed BBC bosses in hot water, as the broadcaster was forced to apologise after the presenter made a slip-up on air. Discussing the Dambusters Raid, a heroic operation during World War II, Sally said it was “infamous”, prompting viewers to complain. “Eighty years after 19 Lancaster bombers took part in the infamous Dambusters Raid, tonight a special anniversary flypast will take place over Lincolnshire,” she said in the live segment.

The BBC later published an apology over the comment, and in a statement on the BBC Complaints website, they clarified what Sally had meant to say. “When highlighting what was coming up on the programme, we did inadvertently refer to the Dambusters Raid as ‘infamous’,” the stated. “Later, when the main item aired, we referred to the ‘famous’ raid. In live programmes, such as Breakfast, errors do occasionally slip through, and we’re sorry for this mistake, and any offence caused.”
