Frisco police arrested Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams on Sunday night, and he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

A police department spokesperson confirmed to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the controlled substance charge was for alleged possession of marijuana, and deemed a low-level state felony. Frisco police also stated that the unlawful carrying of a weapon is a misdemeanour.

Williams played in the Cowboys' most recent pre-season game on Saturday, a 22-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The 24-year-old was with the rest of his team-mates on Sunday morning, but Monday was a scheduled day off.

The defensive end was also with the team on Tuesday, with the Cowboys aware of his arrest. The team declined to comment about Williams through a spokesperson as they await further details.

Williams was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and recorded four sacks in 15 games during a promising rookie year. However, he's already been under investigation by the authorities once while at the Cowboys when he was involved in a car crash back in December.

The Cowboys player saw his car written off as a result of the incident, with neither driver in the two-car crash suffering serious injury. Williams suffered a concussion from the accident and sat out a game for safety reasons, but police trouble then followed as it appeared that the defensive end was well over the speed limit.

Plano police claimed that Williams reached 98 miles per hour in a 55 mph area. Williams also had a track record with police while at the University of Mississippi, but the Cowboys drafted him anyway after conducting 'research'.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that they'd viewed Williams' profile before selecting him, and said on the night of the 2022 NFL Draft: "I’m confident that we know about the young man coming in here, that we’ve covered the ground and we’ve got it all out there.

"After having seen it all out there, we drafted Sam, and I’m confident we got everything." The Cowboys' defence is one of their main assets, and Williams fit in straight away at the franchise and became a regular feature in 2022.

The Cowboys play one final pre-season game on Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders, and it's yet to be confirmed whether Williams will feature. His arrest could potentially see him violate the NFL's conduct policy, but there's no comment yet from the league over if he's at risk of fine or suspension.
