Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has provided an update on Joe Burrow’s recovery from injury.

The Bengals quarterback has been recovering from a calf injury that he sustained during practice on July 27. Burrow was carted off the field during an 11-vs-11 drill after collapsing to the floor in discomfort and was taken to the medical room for treatment.

It was later confirmed that Burrow had sustained a calf injury and would be facing “several weeks” on the sidelines in recovery. As a result, there have been doubts over whether or not Burrow will recover in time to feature in the Week One game of the 2023 NFL regular season against the Cleveland Browns.

Burrow sustained an ACL injury during his rookie year in the NFL in 2020. He subsequently spent nearly a year on the sidelines recovering before returning at the start of the 2021 season.

Taylor was speaking to reporters in a press conference on Monday where he was asked to provide an update on Burrow’s progress. The Bengals head coach said that the quarterback is recovering well and is focusing on the “positive” from what he has seen so far.

“We’ve had a plan throughout, that’s just something since the day it happened we go through and decide what’s going to be best for the next day,” Taylor told reporters.

He added: “It’s a different injury. I would imagine, and I hate speaking for other people, but last year it’s an unknown how is contact going to feel, how is it going to feel like to work. There’s a lot of things with an internal injury.

“I can’t speak to, but I imagine that’s a whole other mindset that you have to have. Whereas this one is in the calf, and he looks great.

“Just physically and walking around, he looks probably as good as he's ever looked at this point. So that’s a positive and we’ll just go from there.”

Burrow was not able to take part in any of the Bengals’ two pre-season games so far due to the injury. Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning have played at QB in the games against the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons.

It is likely to be the same combination of QBs used by the Bengals for the final pre-season game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, August 26. It remains to be seen whether Burrow will have recovered in time to play in the Week One opener versus Cleveland.
