Ian Poulter has expressed his pride at teenage son Luke after the father and son duo competed against each other at the International Series England event at Close House.

Poulter now plays his golf on the LIV Golf circuit, having joined the breakaway circuit last summer. Last week though he turned his attentions to the Asian Tour's stop in Newcastle, as he was one of 23 LIV players teeing it up at Close House.

One man who was also in the International Series field, was Poulter's 19-year-old son Luke, who was competing in his first ever professional golf event.

Luke is currently part of the golf programme at the Florida State University, and has just completed his first year in the Sunshine State.

Despite his lack of experience the teenager impressed on debut, finishing in a tie for 22nd after carding a final round level-par 71, leaving at two-over for the week. Father Ian showed some of his best golf in the North East, landing a second-place finish behind runaway leader, and International Series Order of Merit leader Andy Ogletree.

Afterwards though his thought process was firmly on his son rather than his own second-place showing. Taking to Instagram, the LIV Golf star pointed towards the remarkable journey he has been on with his son throughout his career, which culminated with them playing alongside each other at Close House. He wrote: "Well that went quick @Lukepoults24.

"From travelling on the @RyderCupEurope team plane in 2004, to playing in your first ever event with your old man and finishing T22. You have come so far and we're very proud. You have set your new standard, now time to learn from this and kick on to be whatever you want to be. Dad goals."

Poulter Jr was also pleased with his Asian Tour performance, the highlight being beating his 12-time European Tour winning-dad in Saturday's third round. It’s been amazing," the teenager said. "I beat him [Ian Poulter] one of the days, it was really cool and my main goal was to try and beat him this week, but, he got me by nine!”

Backing his son to 'make it' in professional golf, Poulter Sr told The Telegraph : "I was so proud of him just to make the cut he finished eagle, birdie, par on Friday to get into the weekend when there were loads of good players who missed out.

‌“And then to play the last two rounds in three under and get himself up to a tie for 22nd, in those tough conditions? That’s just brilliant. Luke has a chance now of making it - and he knows it.”
