Former Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph is reportedly set to return to the team as the new defensive coordinator in a rare move not seen within the NFL in years.

Joseph spent two seasons as the Broncos head coach from from 2017 to 2019 before he was eventually fired after a 11-21 record, missing the playoffs in both seasons.

After his stint as a head coach, he returned to being a defensive coordinator - a role he held with the Miami Dolphins in 2016 - as he joined the Arizona Cardinals.

He remained with the Cardinals for four years, with some arguing he impressed in his role although the team had struggled during that period.

Legendary NFL coach Sean Payton has joined the Broncos after being traded from the New Orleans Saints for a first-round pick to join with Russell Wilson.

The Broncos lost their defensive coordinator this off-season, with highly-rated coach Ejiro Evero joining the Carolina Panthers.

That left the defensive coordinator spot open, and knowing that Payton would not have a hand in the defence, Joseph has decided to rejoin the Broncos - according to multiple reports.

It's a very rare move for a former head coach to return to a team in a lesser role, but one that will be seen as a good opportunity with a young, developing Broncos defence.

Joseph has impressed in his role in Arizona, and will now work with some stars in Denver's defence, including Patrick Surtain II.

The Broncos have now built a strong team of coaching staff to put around quarterback Wilson, who struggled in his first year after being traded to the team from the Seattle Seahawks.
